Schönheit, die einem die Luft nimmt, den Atem stockt, die Brust zuschnürt, einen mitten im Lauf anhalten lässt und zum totalen Stillstand bringt?

Einen frösteln lässt, von Grund herauf, die einer sich anbahnenden Ohnmacht gleicht? Die einem die Tränen in die Augen treibt, da man ihre Endlichkeit begreift.

Die eine Sehnsucht hervorruft,  die so groß ist, dass sie einen fast zu Boden drückt, ihre Schwere einen in die Knie zwingt. Die einen gleichzeitig ganz hoch fliegen lässt, man alles versteht aus einem großen Abstand und diese ganz bestimmte und sehr seltene Klarheit in allem Denken hat.

Die so allumfassend ist, dass sie alles andere zur Bühne macht, alle anderen Menschen zu Statisten, alles Erlebte zu einer Geschichte, erzählt von einem Fremden in einem anderen Leben?

Die die Zeit anhält, die alles um einen herum verschluckt und gleichzeitig in strahlendes Licht taucht, voll jener Hoffnung, die niemals in Worte gefasst werden kann da sie nur ein reines Gefühl ist.

Die Vergangenheit und Zukunft zu Worten degradiert und das Jetzt zum Himmel macht, verewigt im Ziel eines jeden Streben, eines jeden Wunsches, eines jeden Traums.

Für die man alles aufgeben, ja vielleicht sogar verletzen und verlassen würde, für die man sich selbst auflösen will, für die man sterben könnte…

Diese Art der Schönheit, genau die.

Ich lese in letzter Zeit ständig in irgendwelchen Publikationen auf Papier und Screen über “zu viel Arbeit, zu wenig Geld” auf Seite der Arbeitnehmenden und auf der Seite der Arbeitgeber “zu wenig motivierte Arbeitskräfte, zu hohe Gehaltsvorstellungen”. Find ich schrecklich, weil auch beide Seiten nur motzen und keiner Schuld ist.

Dann denke ich mir: Bin ich froh, dass ich nie angestellt war (außer einem kurzen Intermezzo 2001) und ich mir also nie diese Frage stellen musste, jedenfalls nie ohne das stark präsente Gefühl von Eigenverantwortug.

Aber seit einiger Zeit bin ich in der Situation, Leuten Arbeit zu geben und wundere mich in einem Fort, wie wenig Selbstbestimmung den Aktionen der Menschen zugrunde liegt, die mir zeitweise gegenübersitzen. Wenn ich einmal alt bin und noch viele Jahre mehr Erfahung gesammelt habe, dann möchte ich über genau dieses Thema ein Buch schreiben und jungen Menschen vermitteln, sich weniger als passive im Wind flatternde Objekte wahrzunehmen sondern zu verstehen, dass sie sich ihr Leben selbst aussuchen können und alle Werkzeuge mit sich tragen, es in ihrem Sinne zu gestalten.

Das Problem liegt nämlich nicht in den oben erwähnten Aussagen. Es liegt an der eigenen Definition von Arbeit jedes Menschen. Denn wer Arbeit als notwendiges Übel sieht wird nie dadurch erfüllt werden und sich selbst die Chance verbauen, die vielen Wochenstunden  als etwas wahrzunehmen, womit man gerne seinen Tag verbringen will. Das das nicht einfach ist, dort hinzukommen und es niemals ein endgültiges Glückstadium geben kann, ist wohl jedem klar, der sich ein wenig mit sich selbst auseinandersetzt.

Man definiere, welche Aufgabe man für sich leben möchte. Dann ergibt sich der Rest ganz von selbst und diese ganze Diskussion wird hinfällig. Auch auf Arbeitgeberseite. Denn wer für sich beschließt, Anderen Arbeit zu geben  und diese Aufgabe mit Verantwortung übernehmen möchte, wird seine Angestellten nicht bis auf den letzten Tropfen Energie aussaugen sondern seine Anforderungen an die Möglichkeiten dieser anpassen. Ziel sollte es jedenfalls sein, gemeinsam ans Ziel zu kommen, wie das geschieht ist fallabhängig und hat auch mit der Branche zu tun, in der man sich bewegt.

Well, this year was certainly an interestig one. Talking rollercoaser rides, you’d probably find a picture of my 2012 in the dictionary. All in all, it was effing fantastic. The most memorable experiences/moments/occurences/learnings included

1. New Years in New York can be absolutely brilliant if you find the right party (thanks Disorient) and the right people to hang out with randomly in the outskirts of Brooklyn (thanks Micah)
2. Being successful on the outside while feeling horrible on the inside is not an option.
3. Being thankful for people’s trust and paying them back by exceeding their expectations.
4. Taking long summer holidays and spending time with people that truly mean something to you (away from internets and computers and pavements and exhaust fumes!!!) is probably the only way to spend summer at all. (thanks to my amazing family, Wilson & Zouzou, Zissa, Stanzi)
5. Kids are not as scary to me anymore. (am surprised myself) As a matter of fact, I feel that it is absolutely beautiful to exchange some of that freedom for some down-to-earth stability and commitment.
6. Read books. As many as you can. Of course only the good kind, written by people with brains that make you so happy you want to cry. Check out my Goodreads List for inspiration.
7. Burning Man is THE most fantastic and liberating trip I have ever taken (so far) and I am so happy I get to spend it with people that feel the same. (Thanks Chrissi for being there with me every single year and the friendship and love you give me, thanks to Sean and Jan for the care, companionship and cuddles you provide and thanks to all the other cool cats that make this so mindblowingly beautiful)
8. Fennel is not as disgusting as I thought.
9. Having an outter body experience. And the feeling of absolute security and trust that comes with it.
10. Not possessing a functioning TV.
11. Really really wanting something to work doesn’t mean it will.
12. My sister close by = one of the best gifts this year. May you not move away again so soon. I want you close to me.
13. Getting enough sleep is key to pretty much anything.
14. Good things come to those who relax. Sometimes it’s better to do nothing and wait. Trying to take control over something you can’t define for yourself is utter nonsense.
15. Vienna is my home. It took me 7 years to totally come to terms with that and I can’t say that I want to stay here forever, but at least I feel like I belong. Also thanks to Erszi, Antonius, Albert, Valentin, Marie & Tintifax.
16. Travelling. And I mean not the work kind but the kind where you put yourself in some means of transportation and just go out there to explore, to suck it all in, to wander, to meet fantastic people and to get lost with some of them.
17. Real friendships last over many years without any physical contact. (thanks Kass for coming over and dancing in my living room with me. And thank you Camilla for being such an amazing friend for such a long long time…)

• Getting older is a thing of beauty because you get to consciously chose between sanity and insanity. Both need a place in my life and today, instead of doubting myself when someone tells me that that’s no good, I just smile and walk away.
• Teenagehood is never truly over.
• Doing things just for the sake of wanting to do them is the most rewarding experience. No applause or appreciation from outsiders needed, sparkling eyes and a dancing heart are the best reward.
• You can only compromise so much for the sake of a relationship. Mutual admiration of the qualities of the other person is vital.
• Trap Music for real dirty dancing.
• Fully embracing ones’s fears will probably always have a secure spot in the top list of the scariest things in the universe. Accept it, let it swallow you, wade through it, experience it and you will be spat out feeling like a new born, having learnt something about yourself.
• Kissing. There can hardly ever be enough kissing.
• Love what you do. Don’t ever compromise on that. Can’ wait for some serious ass kicking with Zissa.
• Cleaning up, getting rid of stuff, simplyfying, treading lightly.

There’s probably more but I can’t think of it now.

Mir sind in den letzten Tagen 2 Dinge aufgefallen:

1. Viele meiner Facebook Freunde sind wirklich ziemlich dämlich.

2. Die Daten Privacy Bullshit Status Geschichte hat viel mit Politik zu tun.

Zum ersten Punkt: wenn es tatsächlich Leute (die studiert haben, Geld verdienen, nicht in irgendwelchen Erdlöchern sitzen) da draußen gibt, die glauben, dass ein Trillionenunternehmen ihnen unentgeltlich einen Service anbietet, der monatlich Millionen kostet (nicht zu wissen, dass Speicherplatz und technologische Entwicklungen Geld kosten ist mehr als ignorant) OHNE dafür irgendetwas zurückzuverlangen, dann, ganz ehrlich, WTF, bitte. Aber dann auch noch zu glauben, dass dieses besagte Unternehmen viele tausende Menschen (vielleich ganz viele kleine süße Umpalumpas?) damit beschäftig (und weitere Trillionenhuntertausende Euro in deren Lohnbeutel schmeisst), die Status-Meldungen in unzähligen Sprachen zu lesen/auszuwerten/zu bearbeiten ist schier – mir fällt dafür gar kein Wort ein. Wo sind wir denn? Bei der Wohlfahrt?

Leute, tickt ihr noch ganz richtig? Facebook ist ein Unternehmen. Die machen Geld, so wie andere Unternehmen auch. Facebook macht das nicht direkt über Eure Konten, sondern über den Verkauf Eurer Daten. Da kuckt sich aber keine Eure blöden Urlaubsfotos an und denkt sich “oh, die hat aber zugenommen, die braucht eine Diätpille” oder lesen Eure wahnwitzigen Status Meldungen “wow, der muss ADS haben, der kauft sich sicher gern einen Bentley” sondern dahinter steckt, ähnlich wie bei Google, ein Algorithmus (die wirklich Unterbelichteten mögen nun einen Duden zücken um dieses Wort nachzuschlagen) der Schlagwörter nutz um an andere Unternehmen Werbeplätze zu verkaufen, damit ihr das seht, was ihr sät. Du schreibst Freitags in Deinen Status “Was soll ich bloß am Samstag Abend anziehen?”, Facebook schlägt Dir per Zalando-Banner vor, Dir doch mal wieder für neunundfünzigfünfundneunzig einen Cocktail-Fetzen zu kaufen, der auch noch innerhalb 12 Stunden geliefert wird. Jedenfalls wäre das der Traum des Zalando Online Marketers.

Wer das nicht will, soll einfach DELETE ACCOUNT drücken und die Sache hat sich. Wer sich über Facebook Werbung näher informieren will, kann das hier lesen.

So, nun zum 2. Punkt: Letzte Woche saß ich bei einem äußerst netten Dinner neben einem jungen, ambitionierten SPÖ Politiker. Wer mich kennt, denkt sich jetzt “Au Weia”. Ich bin dem armen Kerl nicht gleich mit Ayn Rand oder Spencer und Darwin gekommen, allerdings hab ich mir erlaubt, kurz meinen Unmut über die höhe der Sozialabgaben für Unternehmer kundzutun. (Sind auch eine Frechheit) Der gute Mann hat mir darauf erklärt, dass das ja alles nur dazu dient, das System aufrecht zu erhalten, von dem ich und jeder andere Steuerzahler profitieren. Also Ampeln, Museen und Sicherheit durch Polizisten und dergleichen. Das mir das alles klar war und dass die 6% der Bevölkerung, welche als “unvermittelbar” gelten, mit den Steuergeldern in Schach gehalten werden, ebenfalls. (so hat er es ausgedrückt) Also dienen unsere Abgaben eigentlich einem “Pay for Privacy” Modell. So quasi, du zahlst = wir halten Dir den Mob mit Steinen und Fackeln vom Leib. (ich enthalte mich an dieser Stelle meiner Ansicht über die Verteilung ebendieser Abgaben in den Reihen der Gesellschaft)

Warum hält es Facebook nicht wie Herr Sozialstaat und führt ebenfalls ein “Pay For Privacy” Modell ein? Dann können alle paranoiden Vollkoffer ihre Essensfotos,  Liebeskummerlieblingssongplaylisten und Emo Status-Updates vor den kleinen Facebook-Männern verstecken und sich so vor den bösen Bannern schützen, die ihnen das zeigen könnten, was sie sich am meisten wünschen.

And again, I am using my personal blog to show those who are not facebook members (but have made all of this possible by supporting our documentary film project on startnext) some impressions of our time in Bogotá, Columbia. These past days we spent investigating the life of Helmut von Loebell, also by speaking to people that have been working with him, living with him, makig things possible wih him. It’s been incredibly interesting to see SOS Kinderdörfer he founded and even speak to some of the orphans he and his co-workers gave a home about 40 years ago!

Next to that, we roamed the streets of Bogotá and visited the beautiful old town called Candelaria but also took the armoured car into the wildest parts of town whose inhabitants are ravaged by drugs, corruption, poverty and crime. What’s striking in this city is that there are no visible borders between rich and poor in most parts of town. You could be driving past the most beautiful mansions only to find simple shacks behind them, treelined streets seamed with modern skyscrapers make the news for being the place of numerous murders at night.

On tuesday, 7th we arrived in Bogotá safe and sound after a totally relaxed flight from Vienna.

The past days, we’ve been pretty busy, getting up at 6 am to get all that is happening in the hills of Ciudad Bolivar and Sierra Morena. It’s a little bit hectic here – last week, a few people who were deported from their original homes wanted to set up camp right next to the Casa Colorada, the house founded by Helmut von Loebell that gives 220 children shelter and food. The inhabitants “taking care” of the area weren’t too thrilled about these new “neighbours” and a few gringo (meaning Marie and I) roaming around don’t exactly add to their friendliness…

So we have to be careful and can’t walk around too much outside, as people are altert and very cautious to not have the sensitive equilibrium which is vital to organise the slums threatened.

But the sun is shining and our story is slowly coming together beautifully – please do check out some of the first few images right here!

On our way to our much loved Playa in august, we stopped over in LA and stayed with my faneffingtastic friend and fellow burner Jan and his housemate Ralf who also turned out to be a precious little diamond – thanks once again to you, great host people. (I miss you)

They live in a beautiful house in West Hollywood, in which Jan makes New York strip steaks just the right kind of bloody and breakfast tortillas that can bring back the dead. Also, one of their dogs – a fierce Staffordshire -  jumps up trees. The house is just the right kind of whacky, Ralf is an interior designer and has collected a plethora of trinkets and scattered them all around the place, you always end up finding new things to look at and discover. Oh, I love this place that has a magical backyard where fairies dance at dusk…

Very recently, I watched this japanese Studio Ghibli cartoon called “The secret world of Arietty” (which is not as good as “House of moving castles” or “Spirited Away” by the way) about tiny little people. Living in tiny little houses inside big human houses.

And it struck me that people are like houses. Their minds are made like rooms, like furniture, like the layout and designs of the structure. Some of them are rather simple and practical houses, they are efficient and small, consisting of only a kitchen, a bedroom and a white tiled bathroom that doesn’t even have a bath tub. Simple houses are very practical, they have power plugs in every room and new appliances – not Gaggenau but Siemens. Some of them are flat or one storey high, big enough but nothing fancy, the walls bare, equipped only with furniture that is necessary.

And then there are mansions, really flashy and full of expensive stuff. Their owners build them on mountain tops and illuminate them at night, just to show off, communicating “Hey, come have a look at my massivley expensive house!” The rooms in these houses are full of modern artpieces and the couches will always be brand new because no one ever lies or jumps around on them. These houses are located in posh neighbourhoods, have german sports cars in front of them and the whole thing is surrounded by high walls, their owners putting huge locks on them to protect the value that they acquired to show to their „friends“.

And then there are modernist houses, some new, minimalistic with large windows and strict forms. Well structured but also following a stringent concept, not leaving a lot of room for messy kids or spontaneity. In these houses, everything serves a purpose and has to stay on the same spot as the overall look may not be destroyed (under any circumstances). You will not find dust or a stray dog hair on the floors and the carpets  if there are any – have always just been hoovered. Some of the architectural features are striking and might surprise you, but it will always be a calculated kind of surprise, with an orchestrated effect.

There are also those houses that are neglected, empty, dirty, heartless. The cushions on the couches are fraying, the curtains have lost their color, some of the door handles have come lose. They are furnished with Billy shelves and cuttlery from the one dollar shop down the road. These houses purely serve as roofs over someones head and as places to rest for those that are only passing by, in a transit state. They might be big but empty, no music and no candle light.

And then there are the houses that were never really planed, partly old, partly new, sometimes confusing like mazes. Those houses have hidden doors, dusty attics and deep cellars with monsters in them. They have old things in them and new things and everything just kind of goes together without a greater concept. Most of the furniture has been assmbled from all over the world and tells some kind of story – of love and living a colourful life. These kind of houses are cozy and warm but can get damp and cold in winter. They need carfeul repairing every once in a while with parts that are often difficult to find because most things were custom made for them. Their living rooms are filled with light and music and there are books everywhere.Wandering around in them, you’ll find trinkets, cushions and many flowers. You might also find them a little chaotic and yes, these houses often have deep cellars with very dark corners, too. Generally, their inhabitants treat them with respect and care, as they are people who see their value and diversity, who know that these houses are build on a strong foundation to hold them.

A house like that would be mine.

If you are looking for a house to move into, you could definitely find one that is a lot easier to handle, more efficient, spacious and possibly cleaner. But my house is charming and a lot more than just practical or pretty. It’s the kind of place you walk into and won’t forget once you’ve been inside, partly because it’s not so easy to find the door when you first try to get in.

Since I just found some much needed time to indulge in travelling and sunshine and general wellbeing, my creativity has also refeatured and I actually felt like taking pictures again. Also did some writing and some meeting people that are inspiring and sometimes a little weird. One of them is Ilias, who is not only a very talented carpenter who builds fantastic and very useful furniture but also let me crash in his beautiful Kreuzberg pad during fashion circus week in Berlin.

Here are some random facts about his place:

1. He doesn’t just put things somewhere. He ORCHESTRATES every object so you will find yourself confronted with still life-esque ensembles wherever you look.
2. A lot of the things in the appartment were built by him.
3. When I took the pictures, he had been living in that flat for 5 days. (a little spooky but in an amazingly efficient way…)
4. The bathtub plug is very hard to get out and I almost broke my fingers trying to do it.
5. He posesses about 50 Jackets, and about 250 shirts. (most likely unironed, I didn’t manage to check)
6. The sink is terribly small in proportion to the kitchen and it’s very hard to wash many dishes in it.
7. Bowls of brown sugar are evenly distributed throughout the entire flat so if you want some sugar in your coffee you never really have to get up. (must make mental note to do the same)
8. Almost every object in the place is somewhat earthy in colour and has a non-plasticy and real attitude.

Oft gibt es Momente, in denen minderbemittelte Individuen oder Gruppierungen solcher Vorsprung verhindern oder verhindern wollen. (siehe dazu “die christliche Kirche” zu diversen Themen) Die Gründe sind meist recht einfach: a) was der Bauer nicht kennt, frisst er nicht. b) Neid/Schiss: das Andere/Neue könnte weitaus besser sein als das, was bisher war oder c) pure Blödheit.

Heute bin ich wieder mal auf solch einen Fall gestossen: in dem Fall geht es darum, dass die Fotografeninnung Österreich sich immer noch dagegen wehrt, dass sehr talentierte Fotografen in Österreich als das, was sie sind, annerkannt werden. Dieser Fall fällt wohl unter die Rubrik b) Neid/Schiss und c) Blödheit.  Wenn Menschen, wie ein gewisser Prof. Vodicka (dessen Arbeit gelinde gesagt jedes halbwegs kunstversierte Auge zutiefst beleidigt – siehe seine Homepage) sich anmasst, entscheiden zu können ob äußerst talentierte Menschen sich offiziell als Fotografen bezeichnen und wirken dürfen oder nicht, dann ist das weit mehr als nur anmassende Frechheit.

Herr Vodicka, schauen Sie doch mal ganz genau hin und vergleichen Sie ihre “Arbeit” mit der eines Fotografen und Künstlers, der nicht nur ein Auge für Ästhetik hat sondern auch noch weiß, wie man Linsen schärft und Licht setzt. Der Titel Fotograf sollte doch in einer kompetitiven Gesellschaft dem Wirken desjenigen keinen Abbruch tun, der nicht studiert hat oder irgendeinen Schein sein eigen nennt, sondern schlicht und einfach talentiert und engagiert ist!

Lasset die Besseren gewinnen (und räumen Sie endlich das Spielfeld, Herr Vodicka)!

Wer ebenfalls checkt, dass da was nicht mit richtigen Dingen zugeht, möge sich hier informieren.

Wow, jetzt bin ich wirklich seit genau einer Stunde und 22 Minuten 32 Jahre alt. Klingt verdammt erwachsen, wenn man das so auf die Frage “Wie alt sind Sie denn?” sagt. Ich meine so erwachsen, dass keiner die Augen verdreht wenn man in dem Alter seine erste Million verdient hat oder 2-3 Kinder zu Welt gebracht hat. Hab ich aber beides noch nicht. Atypisch fühle ich mich auch nicht unbedingt. Was heisst es schon, älter zu werden.

Früher musste man sich einen Reiseführer kaufen bevor man  auf Reisen ging. Jedenfalls wenn man sich weder an seinem Ziel auskannte noch einen Ortskundigen besucht hat. Diese Bücher waren meist praktisch, aber weder schön noch aktuell.

Dann kam das Internet und immer mehr Menschen fingen an, wie wild auf der Welt herumzureisen. Seither gibt es immer mehr wirklich schöne, ansprechende, hedonistisch ausgelegte Angebote für Reisende, die weder Lust auf Pauschal, noch Bock auf schlechtes Essen in der überteuerten Touri-Kneipe haben. Also genau das richtige für 30-somethings, die ein paar Euro in der Tasche haben, Jungdesigner mögen, stylische, kleine Cafe’s frequentieren und ihr Haupt nachts gern auf wohlriechenden Kissen betten.

Zugebener Maßen könnten sich die Macher von Le Cool mal ein bisschen anstrengen, was ihr Design anbelangt. Das Ganze lehnt sich an Bücher an, die in den 90ern ungefähr das Coolste waren, was Reiseführer zu bieten hatten. Auch jetzt noch gibt es in den Guides allerhand gute Tips, allerdings weniger für Hotels oder Restaurants, sondern eher Ausgeh- und Partytermine.

I’ve been meaning to make a confession for a long time. I am in love with Darth Vader. Which is weird not only because I have never seen Star Wars, not one single episode. I really don’t care about the story, that princess, even though Natalie Portman looked pretty in that movie (I saw images) or Luke or whatever his name is. I dig the Darth. I like his darkness, his crazy cool costume, his breatlessness. And the fact that his emotional set-up resembles a Clown. Now don’t get me wrong, Clowns creep the fuck out of me since I read King’s IT when I was about 12, but I can relate to their ambiguity. They are funny on the outside and sad on the inside, smiling widely with a warped tint. This is what the Dark Lord is to me.

In my amateur belief, he’s esentially a good guy and when he was born, he had his morals right in place. But then things happened, shit hit the fan. The big bad star-world made Darth get sidetracked and he started to believe in force and power and killing and revenge. Poor Darth. But to be honest, and since I will never meet him to verify my impression on his character, mainly I care for his outfit. Rarely have we seen such timeless elegance in a costume that is not only recognized by pretty much anyone in the modern world, made Lego build figurines,  but also stands for mistery and father issues. So many people have used it as an inspiration, just look at Daft Punks outfits, Gareth Pugh’s fashion or the bad guys outfits in modern Sci-Fi movies. Darth is the godfather of cool helmets, just like Karl Lagerfeld is the godfather of black shades. Darth is fashion history.

Mal wieder habe ich ein besonders begabtes Mitglied aus meinem extensiven Freundeskreis getroffen und ihn nebst einem Cafe nach seinem kometenhaften Werdegang als Star-DJs befragt (zukünftig).

Er (Name von der Redaktion weggelassen) ist seit mittlerweile acht Jahren Dj. Der Kerl ist erst 26, was bedeutet, dass er schon als 18jähriger cool war. Oder mindestens ein cooles Hobby hatte, denn so lange kenn ich ihn noch nicht, als dass ich meine Hand ins Feuer legen würde.  Am Anfang gab’s natürlich noch kein Geld – er nennt seine Herangehensweise in der Beginner-Phase liebevoll den “klassischen Bedroom Dj Approach”. Was soviel bedeutet wie: er hat erst mal für die Inneneinrichtung aufgelegt. Dann kamen nach und nach die Gigs und Anfragen. Eines führte zum anderen. Als DJ kommt man ja recht schnell mit neuen Leuten zusammen die die Dinge geschehen lassen können….

Musik. 3 Sätze, warum du dich für Musik entschieden hast? Also nicht Fine Arts oder Fashion Design?

Musik war mir persönlich immer wichtig. Die Stimmungen die man damit erzeugen kann. Du kannst innerhalb von zwei Songs extreme Trauer und totale Freude empfinden, wenn du die Tracks spürst. Das hat mich fasziniert, das wollte ich den Leuten auf den Weg geben durch meine Sets.

Majestic Mood, dein Name auf Skype und twitter – was bedeutet der?

Ich muss ganz ehrlich zugeben, dass ich zu Beginn dem Namen keine große Bedeutung beigemessen habe. Als der erste Gig in einem Club bevorstand mußte ich einen Namen haben, natürlich macht man sich auch schon davor Gedanken darüber. Wie werde mich nennen, klingt das cool und so weiter… Ich war damals nicht sehr innovativ, viele schrottige Namen sind mir eingefallen. Kein wirklich guter. Dann hab ich meinen Bruder gefragt, der hat kurz ins Leere geschaut und dann gesagt, nenn dich Majestic Mood. Das war’s. Im Laufe der Zeit hat der Name eine Bedeutung bekommen durch die Musik die ich spiele; das Publikum hat begonnen etwas damit zu verbinden. Was sie genau spüren kann ich nicht sagen, aber es scheint gut zu sein. Am Ende des Tages ist alles Musik für mich. Dafür steht auch der Name – das Gefühl das man durch Musik bekommt.

Hörst du beim ausgehen nur auf das, was der DJ macht oder kannst du auch tanzen? Wenn ja, zu welcher Musik?

Dieses Beurteilen ist eine ewige Krankheit und sicher auch eine der Schattenseiten des Auflegens. Sicher höre ich mir den DJ genau an, vorallem wenn ich wegen ihm in den Club gehe – um ihn zu hören. Mittlerweile kommt in den Sets der Punkt wo ich merke, dass das hinhaut. Wenn er einen guten Sinn für Mischung und Stimmung hat dann vergißt man das technische schnell. Musik zu der ich mich quasi „fallen lassen“ kann ist meist die die ich nicht kenne. Sonst ist’s langweilig – oft kennt man die Dinge einfach schon eine Weile vor den offiziellen Erscheinungsterminen. Das macht es noch schwieriger – es gibt wenig Zeug, das in der Lage ist dich zu überraschen. Je eklektischer und osbskuerer desto besser, dann kommt der Sound in den Vordergrund und man tanzt ohne nachzudenken.

Der beste Club-Abend, den du je hattest und warum?

Das mag jetzt ein wenig eingebildet klingen, aber es war eine Party die ich gemeinsam mit Trishes (FM4) organisiert hatte. Die Reihe heißt Royal Eclectic und fokusiert, wie der Name schon sagt, auf eklektische Musikauswahl. Wir hatten Dj LeftO aus Brüssel da. Was den Abend so speziell machte war einerseits die Tatsache, dass es uns gelungen war die Leute zu bewegen. Andererseits, und das ist viel wichtiger, gab es eine Grundstimmung die ihresgleichen suchte. Ich hab schon so viele Parties erlebt, hinter oder vor den Plattenspielern. Noch nie habe ich die Leute so losgelöst und locker zur Musik tanzen sehen. Wien ist ja doch eine tanzverkrampfte Stadt, da gestaltet sich das schon mal schwieriger. Bei uns schien das kein Thema zu sein. Das war einfach ein reines Glücksgefühl, den ganzen Abend lang. Jeder wirkte zufrieden. Mehr möchte man nicht.

Was bedeutet Authentizität für dich?

Phew. Wichtiges Wort. Für mich bedeutet es Treue gegenüber sich selbst, wenn das nicht vielleicht eh so in einem Wörterbuch steht. Es kann etwas lebensbestimmendes sein, wenn man es zuläßt und zu einem Prinzip erhebt. Als Künstler heißt es für mich, nur die Dinge zu verfolgen und zu verwirklichen die ich fühle. Natürlich kommt man in dem Aufleg Business immer wieder mal an Jobs die nicht wirklich das wahre sind. Dann gilt es einfach herauszufinden ob ich den Gig machen kann ohne mich dabei selbst zu verleugnen. Wenn sich das ausgeht bin ich authentisch geblieben. Als Mensch, mit all den Verantwortungen die das Leben mit sich bringt, hat das Wort noch eine größere Tragweite für mich.

Du bist unter tags fast Anwalt – lassen sich Passion und Berufung vereinen?

Gute Frage, lange Zeit war das für mich komplett konträr. Ich dachte mir oft, dass meine berufliche Karriere der Musik in meinem Leben ein Ende setzen würde. Mittlerweile sehe ich das nicht mehr so eng. Ich habe Überschneidungspunkte gefunden – Stichwort Entertainment Law, Copyright und geistiges Eigentum. Das sind durchwegs spannende Themen die auch Künstler beschäftigen, leider zwangsläufig in der heutigen Zeit. Ob das eine das andere ausschließen oder beeinträchtigen wird liegt schlussendlich nur bei mir. Do I make it happen or not. Das ist meine Entscheidung. Momentan sehe ich vorallem durch Radio und die Dinge die ich mache eine Möglichkeit beides unter einen Hut zu bringen. Ich glaube das ist auch realistisch. Egal was passiert, die Musik wird mich nicht mehr verlassen, es wird immer Raum dafür geben in meinem Leben. Ich kann mir das nicht anders vorstellen – dafür gibt sie mir einfach zu viel.

Welche Acts sind für dich gerade wichtig und warum?

74 Miles Away: Das ist eine Jazz Combo aus Belgien, Pierre Anaeckert vereint sie unter seinen Flügeln. Gemeinsam mit Monkey Robot machen sie wunderbaren Jazz, die durch die Interpretation von Monkey Robot zu tanzbaren Tracks werden. Einfach eine schöne Fusion von alt und neu.

Letherette: Ein englischer Artist der in dem unendliche Meer an Beat Produktionen heraussticht. Für mich haben die einfach einen herausragenden Sound und Flow, den ich aus 100 Liedern herauskennen kann.

James Blake: zu ihm brauche ich eigentlich nicht viel sagen. Der Junge kann einfach zu viel. Er kann diesen wirklich geilen Dubstep machen und andererseits total nachdenkliche wunderbar langsame Songs, ich denke da an Limit to Your Love. Sicher wurde er so breit behandelt wie schon lange niemand mehr in dem Underground Genre. Egal, er ist zentral.

Jacques Greene: Post Dubstep oder eigentlich Post Genre, wie man es am besten nennen sollte, in Reinform. Hier will ich gar nicht großartig erklären. Die Musik sagt hier schon alles. Steh mal mit dem Track in der Früh auf, dann erklärt sich die Musik von selbst.

I have always been a sucker for cheesy synth lines and electronic pop music. Maybe that’s because I am a child of the eighties and was subconsciously breastfed my mothers obession with Icehouse. However, these kids just do it right. Authenticity

My life, mainly my job life, is rimmed by a few douchebags and I am continously making an effort to stay away from them as far as I possibly can. And it works out. What makes someone you have to deal with on a weekly basis almost unbearable to me is the lack of authenticity. Because if someone is authentic, you know what you’re dealing with, even if you don’t like that person so much on an emotional level. So, this shouldn’t only be limited to the month of april but to the whole universe, now and for ever. Be authentic, love what you do and do it properly!

An old farm house near Dresden/Germany

Since my early childhood, I have been mesmerized and simoultanously scared shitless by old houses. But imagining the history and lives of the people who once inhabited a house is one of my favorite past time daydream hobbies. Last weekend, I was invited to go to Dresden with beloved Chrissi to see her family there and also visit their spooky old DDR farm house that happens to sit on a piece of land they recently acquired. We found straw filled walls, broken windows, decaying wooden floorboards that gave way when we stepped on them, residues of old kitchen furniture and many, many spiders => I was pretty stoked and my dreams were filled with images from cold winters in dark rooms whithout heating, wireless internet and cable television. Sich feiern für nichts.

“Eine Phrase wird gekennzeichnet durch zwei Eigenschaften. Die äußere Form ist angeberisch, der Inhalt aber ist nicht der Rede wert,” soll Herr Schopenhauer gesagt haben. Der Satz hat sich mir eingebrannt. Denn das Phrasen-Thema ist eines meiner liebsten, beziehungsweise eines der Themen, die mich fast verzweifeln lassen. Weil es sich dabei um die allanerkannte Problematik der “Second-Hander” dreht, oder einfacher gesagt, die der Menschen, die nicht machen weil sie gerne machen, sondern weil sie wollen, das andere sagen wie toll sie es machen. Was ich damit meine: es ist manchmal fast nicht erträglich für mich zu sehen, wie sich Menschen für nichts feiern, sich gegenseitig bejubeln als hätten sie etwas tolles erreicht. Haben sie aber nicht. Und das schlimmste daran ist, dass sie das wissen. Deswegen schliessen sie Deals mit Anderen ab, die auch nichts machen, auf das sie so richtig selbst stolz sind, und ohne Applaus zu brauchen. So nach dem Motto: “du klatscht für mich, ich klatsch für dich.”

Wenn ich mir ansehe, welche Musik, Kunst oder Persönlichkeiten heute gehyped werden, muss man sie fast Phrasen nennen. Ich stelle mir das Enstehen einer Phrase ungefähr so vor: mittelmäßige Menschen sagen über mittelmäßige Bücher/Filme/Mode/Magazine/Menschen, dass sie toll sind. Weil aber ebendiese mittelmäßig interessanten Menschen natürlich nicht anders sein wollen als andere (ihre Selbstsicherheit beruht darauf, dass sie sich so benehmen wie die Gruppe um sie herum und sie sich zugehörig fühlen wollen durch ein gemeinsames Erscheinungsbild oder ähnliche Sprache) bejubeln sie meisst Dinge, die die Anderen (aus der Gruppe) auch bejubeln. Auch wenn sie das Buch nicht gelesen oder verstanden haben, den Film in Wirklichkeit saulangweilig fanden oder das Magazin nichts anderes macht, als andere in den Dreck zu ziehen und scheiß Fotografen zu angagieren die Mode ablichten, die niemand wirklich schön findet. Lustig ist, solche Meinungen dann zu hinterfragen, denn die meisten dieser Menschen haben keine klare Meinung dazu, warum sie etwas toll finden oder nicht. Aber wie können sie sich dann überhaupt ernst nehmen, beziehungsweise von Anderen ernst genommen werden wenn sie nicht hinter ihren Präferenzen stehen können?

Was mich dann wieder glücklich macht, ist, dass die meisten, Andy Warhol wäre wohl ihre Galleonsfigur, von diesen Applaus-Geilen Blendern ganz schnell wieder in der Versenkung verschwinden. Weil sie niemals nachhaltig agieren können da sie viel zu abhängig von ihrem Publikum sind und das Herz, die Seele und die Leidenschaft ihrem Tun fehlt. Dann sehe ich mir die wenigen an, die schaffen, weil sie nicht anders können und deren Tun getrieben ist von Leidenschaft, von Perfektion, von Kompromisslosigkeit. Sie sind die, die ich bewundere, ihr Erfolg ist das Einzige, was zählt.

SMAROMI macht wirklich gute Gewürze. Und zwar nicht nur im Sinne des Gaumenschmauses, sondern auch hinsichtlich unserer hedonistischen Erwartung bezüglich dem Gesamtbild unserer Küche. Denn jemand, der einen 5stelligen Betrag für seine Designer-Küche bezahlt hat, will doch das Ganze nicht etwa mit den hässlichen und lieblosen Plastik-Glas Gewürzspendern verschandeln, die der Supermarkt um die Ecke im Regal stehen hat. Deshalb habe ich mich für dieses Interview mit Sven Weizenegger in Berlin verabredet, der ein schönes neues Start-Up ins Leben gerufen hat: er sucht auf der ganzen Welt hervorragende Gewürze und verpackt diese in schöne und praktische Glasbehälter. Eine tolle Idee, wie ich finde…

Sven, du bist von 925 von Mo-Fr Hacker bei T-Systems. Jetzt hast du dein eigenes Gewürz-Start-Up gegründet. Warum in aller Welt hast du dich ausgerechnet für Gewürze entschieden?

Mir ist Qualität bei Lebensmitteln schon immer wichtig gewesen. Das liegt unter anderem sicherlich an meinen türkischen Wurzeln. Meine Familie hatte eine Haselnussplantage und mein Urgroßvater einen Gewürzladen in der Stadt (am Schwarzen Meer), daher kommt wohl die Liebe zu dem Thema zustande. Wir hatten immer gutes Essen daheim, sind gemeinsam am Tisch gesessen im Sommer. Das, was auf den Tisch kam war immer frisch und mit guten Gewürzen zubereitet. Das war spannend und lecker zugleich. Aber zurück in Deutschland war ich nie wirklich glücklich mit dem Angebot, das es hier gab. Das fing damit an das ich Gewürze kaufte, deren Geschmack sich durch deren schlechte Verpackung schnell veränderte. Das ist einer der Gründe dafür, dass ich mich mit meinem sehr guten Freund Georg Gajewski daran gemacht habe, das zu ändern.

Was willst du denn genau ändern?

Ich will die innere Schönheit der Gewürze mit der äußeren Schönheit der Verpackung vereinen, unserem speziellen Aromaglas.

Die Idee ist ja bekanntlich das wichtigste, aber es braucht auch Mut dazu, diese dann in die Tat umzusetzen. Was genau reizt dich daran, ein Unternehmer zu sein?

Ich gehöre laut meinen Freunden wohl eher zu den größenwahnsinnigen Menschen und dadurch ist in mir dieser Drang etwas zu erschaffen, was Neues zu bewegen. Das ist wie ein Virus den man nicht weg bekommt. Ich kann nicht ruhig da sitzen und nichts tun. Rational kann ich das also nicht wirklich erklären, aber ich empfinde das als etwas positives, dass auch ruhig so bleiben kann.

Gut. Nun sind diese Gewürze schon erhältlich und On- als auch Offline zu kaufen. Wen sprecht ihr damit an, beschreibe doch mal “den” Smaromi Kunden….

Ich würde sagen, dass der Smaromi Kunde wie ich auch einerseits nach Qualität sucht, eine Selektion von Gewürzen mit nur den besten Inhalten erwartet aber auch etwas für das Auge will.  Beides zusammen macht doch Menschen noch viel glücklicher, für schöne Verpackungen und qualitativ hochwertigen Inhalt gibt es bereits viele erfolgreiche Beispiele, vor allem im Lifestyle Segment.

Kochst du gern und wenn ja, was?

Ich koche unheimlich gerne. Ich bin ein unheimlicher Fan von Steak, sehr gutem Steak, aber Steak machen ist ja schon für sich oftmals
ein kleines Abenteuer. Ansonsten bin ich Fan der Französischen Küche und schaue aber immer mehr nach Skandinavien,
vernachlässige natürlich aber niemals die neue moderne deutsche Küche.

Was willst du mit Smaromi erreichen, was sind eure nächsten Schritte?

Eigentlich ganz einfach: Die Welt erobern. Haha! Wir sind ab Mai im Voo Store in Berlin, sozusagen unser Flagshipstore. Als ich da reinkam war ich sofort begeistert und wusste: hier gehört Smaromi rein. Lauter schöne und qualitativ hochwertige Designersachen. Dann sind wir demnaechst im Bixels in Berlin in der Mulackstr zu kaufen, schon jetzt können die Leute dort schon unser Salz probieren, ebenfalls ein toller Laden mit leckerem Essen. Wir sind dabei weitere Salzsorten ins Sortiment zu nehmen – ich finde Salz spannend, soviele unterschiedliche Geschmacksrichtungen gibt es dort zu entdecken. Letztens entdeckte ich Salz das aussieht wie schwarze Pyramiden… Wow! Aber als erstes steht unser neues Salz an, welches
über Wacholderholz geraeuchert wird. Ein wahrer Gaumenschmaus!!!

Wie wählt ihr die Gewürze für euer Sortiment aus, macht ihr Marktforschung oder geht ihr nach eurem eigenen Geschmack/Gefühl?

Ich hab in meiner Küche einige hundert Gewürzproben, ich lade Freunde ein, die SMAROMI Kunden sein könnten, wir kochen gemeinsam und ich lasse sie am Entscheidungsprozess teilhaben. Sie riechen daran, probieren es auch pur und bekommen ein noch viel besseres Verstaendniss dafür. Oder ich frage auch mal wildfremde Menschen im Park oder befreundete Sterneköche, die dann damit auch kochen und mir sehr viel gutes Feedback geben. Das alles fließt dann in unsere Auswahl ein. Grundsätzliche gehen wir nach Geschmack und Gefühl, wuerde ich es nur auf Marktforschung anlegen muesste ich Jodsalz wie im Supermarkt verkaufen, aber darauf habe ich keine Lust. Jeder Mensch besitzt ja eine gewisse “Kulinarische Intelligenz” und ich setze mich einfach sehr sehr intensiv mit Lebensmitteln auseinander.

Verrat uns doch zum Abschluss noch dein Liebligsrezept, welches mit Smaromi Gewürzen natürlich am besten schmeckt!

Ich hab kein wirkliches Lieblingsrezept, das hängt immer von Lust und Laune sowie von der aktuellen Saison ab. Jetzt nicht lachen, aber das ist auch immer mein Restauranttest: Ich liebe Rührei, das ich mit rotem Hawaiisalz von Smaromi würze, und gerade teste ich Wikingersalz und bin schwer beeindruckt. Ich freue mich, dass es bald in den Läden und online zum Verkauf stehen wird.

Mädchenherzen schlagen für schöne Dinge, vorallem wenn sie weich und praktisch sind und man “Bommel” (Quote Camilla) dranhängen kann. Eine gute Freundin von mir, Lili Radu, hat vor einer Woche ihre neue Leder-Kollektion gestartet, und die heisst genau wie sie, Lili Radu. Was so toll ist an ihren Taschen und Leder-Accessoires? Sie sind nicht nur schön sondern praktisch. Dabei meine ich Laptop Taschen mit einem extra Fach fürs Kabel oder Geldbeutel, in denen sogar noch iPhones oder Blackberries Platz finden. Wenn man wie ich dazu neigt, ein paar Wochen auf schicke Dinner zu verzichten, um sich eine Tasche zu leisten freut sich auch über die Preiskategorie, in der sich die Produkte bewegen… Wer also auf Luis Vuitton und Prada Geldbeutel steht und den non-fussy chic von italienischem Traditionslederhandwerk mag, ist hier genau richtig.

Ich habe Lili interviewt und sie zu Ihrem Label befragt…

Wann hattest du die Idee, dein Label zu gründen und welche Aspekte haben dich überzeugt, dass es klappen kann?

Ich hatte die Idee letztes Jahr waehrend meines Fashion Masters an der Bocconi in Mailand. Nachdem wir Studenten Naechte damit verbracht haben Marktanalysen über den Fashionbereich zu erstellen und ich doch relativ viel lernen konnte über das Business und speziell auch das Lederbusiness, habe ich mich irgendwann selber gefragt, warum probierst du es nicht einfach. Am Schluss ist es ist dann sicherlich auch aus einem Eigenbedürfnis enstanden, da ich z.B. immer nach einer Ledertasche für meinen Laptop gesucht habe oder einem grossen Wallet, die auf der einen Seite aus hochwertigem Leder und auf der anderen Seite doch funktionell sind und irgendwie habe ich nie was Passendes gefunden. Ob das Business klappen wird ist eine gute Frage und steht in den Sternen, aber ich weiss, dass jeder der das Produkt bis jetzt in den Händen hielt, es nicht mehr loslassen wollte und das macht mich glücklich.

Wie wählst du die Farben für deine Produkte aus?
Ich habe Tage mit meinem Produzenten in der Gerberei verbracht und mir verschiedenste Ledertypen und Farben angeschaut. Ich wusste schon immer, dass ich eher klassiche Farben im Sortiment haben möchte: schwarz, braun, taupe, die Männer und Frauen beide tragen können. Ich habe mich jedoch in dieses eine Blau in der Gerberei einfach verliebt, was auch mittlerweile Lili’s Iconic Blue heisst.

War es schwer einen guten Produzenten zu finden und was empfiehlst du anderen Jungdesignern?
Ich habe mich auf eine zweimonatige Reise begeben und ueber 20 Produzenten besucht, angefangen hat es mit einem Roadtrip durch Italien von Mailand nach Napoli und dann bin ich in Istanbul gelandet, wo auch mittlerweile mein Produzent ist, mit dem ich sehr zufrieden bin. Ich glaube, dass man sich wirklich die Zeit nehmen sollte, da das wichtigste das Produkt selber ist. Wenn die Qualität nicht stimmt, kann man soviel Marketing betreiben wie man möchte, aber die Kunden werden nicht glücklich sein.

Wie kam es zu den Designs der Stücke? Was war an dem Findungsprozess das schwierigste und was hat am meisten Spaß gemacht ?
Ich reise für mein Leben gerne und erkundschafte neue Kulturen und lass mich hauptsächlich davon inspirieren. Das Design der Produkte ist jedoch sehr klassisch und simpel gehalten, was mir sehr wichtig war, da die meisten Taschen für Frauen und Männer designt sind. Das Design entwerfe ich zusammen mit Julia und Christina Urschler, die im Modebereich als Grafikdesignerinnen arbeiten und mit denen mich eine langjährige Freundschaft verbindet.

Was sind deine nächsten wichtigen Schritte, um Lili Radu größer zu machen?
Ich bin jetzt in einem meiner Meinung nach grossartigen Concept Store in Wien gelistet und auch schon in Gesprächen mit Stores in verschiedenen Städten in Deutschland und Paris. Ich möchte Lili Radu wirklich step by step aufbauen und freue mich unglaublich auf diese Herausforderung.

Wie oft wird es neue Designs geben?
Ich habe natürlich schon ein Menge Ideen in meinem Kopf und es wird sicherlich bald neue Designs geben und neue Farben speziell für den Sommer.

Bei mir geht es diesen Sommer um die Farbe Blau, da es eine Farbe ist mit so vielen Facetten, die man zu allem kombinieren kann.

YOSHI’s Corner // Vienna // Wollzeile 40

Last Friday, Martin opened his new store. And, it’s not just any kind of store. It’s Vienna’s first proper concept store. I went to the opening and I did like what I saw. It’s a two story place in the heart of town that hosts some great design and, in the lower level, well, Andy Warhol. I ‘m sure they will come up with some more original art to showcase (sorry, I hate Andy Warhol cause he was a self-obsessed douchebag). But the space looks good, ot’s big and state-of-the-art and definately worth checking out for some cool furniture, very lovely wall papers, a pretty large selection of art books and for a perfectly mixed drink in the bar downstairs.

There is video content and there is video content. I watch a lot of stuff in my every day life. For work and pleasure. The most thrilling moments are those when work and pleasure meet. This last happened, when I saw the new online video campaign of EF Language Schools. Paris, Barcelona, Beijing, London etc. are part of the EF network and offer language courses to young students that want to learn a language in its original country. And that this is fun which is portraied in these video clips. The use of typography, images, the right cast, beautiful color grading works magic; and hey, these kids just did an amazing job. LOVELOVELOVE!

Ahh, maybe it’s the first sunrays this spring that make me love the new website of Kate Spade, but hey, even if it was raining and freezing I would love this. It’s a perfect example of how a brand manages to communicate a feeling to their customers. The colors, the language, the way it’s set up all playful and pretty is exactly what Kate Spade stands for. This website doesn’t say “Hey, you, customer, buy this otherwise you’ll be kicked from the stairwell of style” but “hey, we like what we do, come play with us and while you’re at it, become part of it all by purchasing something”. Great!

Clever photography makes me happy, and this job by Miss Werning is not only clever but also extremely determined. I mean, collecting old images of friends and family and then making them sit in exactly the same pose in pretty much exactly the same clothes clearly shows that Irina was focused when doing this project. NOT JUST A LABEL // Fashion Designer Directory

Well, this is not a new thing. But I still want to include it. Why? Because I like projects that are based on a strong and uncompromising love towards something. Some of you might call that idealistic, but seriously, in my world love is the only valid motor to do anything. And NJAL is all about fashion, so I love it even more. Yes, it’s not mainstream, it’s that part of fashion that only the proper fashion lovers know about, but that is RAD! Because today, there are so many people who do stuff they don’t care about in order to make people they don’t care about buy it. Which is terrible, really. I mean in regards to real acomplishement that fills our heart and souls.

Ricardo Bofill // House and Office – 1975, Sant Just Desvern, Barcelona

I am not a great connaisseur of architecture but I know what I like when I see it. This transformed former cement factory turned office of  architect Ricardo Bofill based in Barcelona truly amazed me. Its a space that I instantly felt like visiting and am planning to visit during my next trip to the Catalan Headquarters in may. I came across it on one of my favorite sources of inspration, Trendland and you are welcome to read up on it. If I visit this place I will make sure to take some pictures myself…

Eines der Dinge, die in meinem Leben wirklich unheimlich gut sind, ist die Tatsache, dass ich mich ständig mit neuen Dingen auseinandersetzen muss, nein kann, noch besser, WILL!

Letztens, als ich mal wieder mit Andreas ein Kommunikations-Projekt gemacht habe, und natürlich wie bei all unseren Projekten live am Set dabei sein wollte, bin ich in den 22. Wiener Gemeindebezirk gefahren, um bei den Dreharbeiten für den Art/Fashion Film META.MORPH mit den ziemlich abgefahrenen Leder Skulpturen von Una Burke dabei zu sein.

Andreas hatte mir vorher schon irgendwas von einer besonderen Art der Fotografie erzählt, alles was ich noch in Erinnerung hatte war Collo-irgendwas und Silber und alt und selten.

Als ich ankam lief ich schnurstracks Stefan Sappert in die Arme, den ich bis dato nicht kannte und der Mann hat mir dann alles über Collodion Wet Plate Photography (zu deutsch Kollodium Nassplatten Fotografie) erzählt, denn ganz offensichtlich (und ich habe das nachgegoogelt) ist er einer der wenigen Menschen weltweit, die so was überhaupt können. Habe ihn gleich ausgefragt und war ganz glücklich, wieder etwas dazu gelernt zu haben.

Lieber Stefan, was genau ist denn Kollodium Nassplatten Fotografie?

In diesem Fall hier ist es eine sogenannte Ambrotypie auf schwarzem Glas, also eine die Erzeugung eines fotografischen Bildes durch ein Negativ-Verfahren. Die Technik nennt sich „Kollodium Nassplatten Fotografie“ aus dem Jahr 1851 und ist eine der ersten fotografischen Verfahren überhaupt. Dabei wird ein schwarze Glasplatte mit Kollodium beschichtet – einem zähflüssigen chemischem Gemisch aus Äther und Alkohol. Danach wird die Platte im Silberbad lichtempfindlich gemacht um dann unmittelbar darauf  noch nass belichtet zu werden.

Klingt nach einer ziemlich aufwändigen Sache…

Ja, alles geschieht in reiner Handarbeit. Die Fotochemie für dieses Verfahren gibt es nicht mehr zu kaufen, sämtliche Chemikalien werden aus einzelnen Bestandteilen zusammengemischt. Außerdem ist die Kamera ein Spezialanfertigung die auf Bestellung in den USA gefertigt wurde.

Die Ergebnisse sind unglaublich schön und besonders!

Ich liebe die einzigartige Ästhetik dieser Bilder, diese harmoniert auch perfekt mit meinen Arbeiten. Alles in allem ist es eine sehr besondere Art, Dinge festzuhalten – auch durch die Tatsache, dass man Fotografien aus Glas und echtem Silbe vor sich hat.  Was außerdem toll ist, ist die Licht-Echtheit die man mit diesem Verfahren erreichen kann. Ich habe Prints aus 1850 gesehen, die noch immer so aussehen, wie frisch entwickelt.

Krasser Kontrast zu der heutigen schnellen und easy-to-handle Digitalfotografie…

Die Bilder sind voller Schlieren, Artefakten und Fingerabdrücken die auf die Herstellung zurückzuführen sind. Ein einziges Bild herzustellen nimmt eine Menge Zeit in Anspruch. Das ist natürlich nicht vergleichbar mit modernerDigitalfotografie, aber bei meiner Arbeit geht es auch um den Aspekt des Einzelstücks. Jede Ambrotypie ist ein Unikat, dass nicht reproduziert werden kann. Geht beispielsweise eine Glasplatte zu Bruch, ist das wertvolle Bild für immer verloren.

Klingt ziemlich aufwändig für die heutige Zeit. Gibt es einen Markt für diese Art der Fotografie?

Kollodium Nassplatten Fotografie ist zeitaufwändig und kostenintensiv. Man muss die einzelnen Chemikalien besorgen und mischen, sich vorher genau überlegen, was man fotografieren will und das planen. Alles in allem ist es eine sehr besondere Art, Dinge festzuhalten und am Ende hat man Bilder aus Silber. Wenn man sich eine Platte ansieht, sind die hellen Stellen alle aus richtigem Silber. Einfach faszinierend.

Was ist wichtig zu beachten?

Zugegeben, es ist ungeheuer aufwändig Fotografien auf diese Art zu fertigen. Aber wenn man die Ergebnisse betrachtet, sind diese mit keiner anderen Form der Fotografie vergleichbar. Die Frage nach dem Markt ist schwierig zu beantworten, ich würde sagen dieser findet sich eher in der künstlerischen Fotografie, meine Arbeiten wurden in internationalen Galerien gezeigt und in Magazinen veröffentlicht. Fakt ist, dass viele dieses einzigartige Verfahren gar nicht kennen. Ich bin keinesfalls ein Künstler, der aus nostalgischen Gründen mit diesem Medium arbeitet – ich finde es spannend, die Normen moderner Fotografie zu brechen und Projekte und Aufträge mit meiner alternativen Fotografie damit in einen modernen Kontext zu setzen – dies zeigt beispielsweise meine letzte Arbeit für Fashion Designerin Una Burke.

Liebe, Liebe, Liebe – da mir gerade ganz offensichtlich derjenige, der im Universum dafür zuständig ist seine ganze Aufmerksamkeit widmet und mich damit überhäuft, kann ich nicht umhin das hier mit euch zu teilen. Es gibt schon seit längerer Zeit zwei Schriftsteller, die mich beim Lesen des von ihnen verfassten immer wieder zu Ausrufen der Bewunderung, Freude und Erleuchtung bewegen. Ich frage mich gerade, ob Tom Robbins und Ayn Rand im richtigen Leben Freunde geworden wären, hätten sie sich je kennengelernt. Für beide ist Freiheit ein essenzielles Thema, wobei sich Ayn eher ernsthaft und kriegerisch dazu äußert und die “Freiheit, zu tun was man tun muss” und Tom spielerisch und mit einer gewissen Nonchalance an das Thema “Freiheit, zu tun was man tun will” herantritt.

Jedenfalls gibt es von den beiden zwei Zitate, die ich mir nachdem ich sie gelesen hatte, auf mein Herz und in meinen Kopf tätowiert habe. Denn sie drücken für mich genau das aus, was Liebe sein soll. Ich habe beide unzählige Male gelesen in den letzten Jahren und war mir nie sicher, ob ich sie nur in Theorie verstehe oder ob ich sie auch in die Praxis umsetzen könnte, was in dem Fall fühlen/spüren bedeuten würde.

Jetzt weiß ich, dass es möglich ist. Und dass man diese Sätze am besten nie vergisst. Und zwar nicht nur in Bezug auf romantische Liebe, sondern in Bezug auf jegliche Art von Liebe. Um das auszudrücken habe ich mir erlaubt, die beiden Zitate der Schrifsteller miteinander zu verquicken, um sie an eine ganz bestimmte Person in meinem Leben zu richten…

Some cities are like strippers – their in your face and all exposed.

But I guess those are only good for japanese hardcore europe-in-24-hours-tourists or those white-socked and birkenstocked visitors who run around dark alleys with big maps and ask drug dealers for directions, totally oblivious to culture, local habitat and, uhm, common sense.

Vienna is not a stripper. It’s more a Burlesque dancer, mysterious, two-faced at times, disguised as a pretty lady with whipped cream on top. But not unlike a chocolate Moelleux, you have to take a proper bite to truly taste it, to smell it and to enjoy it.

Like in most interesting women, the true beauty of the city lies beneath, has to be discovered, pulled out and sought for. Go take a stroll in the small passageways in the first district, find Franziskaner Platz and sit in the Kleines Cafe, drink black coffee and watch the scene consistiing of of old artists, writers and young intelectuals. Try the Schnittlauchbrot, dark, crusty bread with chives on top when you’re there, it’s a speciality and they do it best.

Wander around the Zentralfriedhof on a misty afternoon and get lost in the memories of those who lie here. Take a lover and make out while realising that life is finite.

Grab a planket and take a car up to the Himmelwiese (in summer) which is surrounded by meadows and wineyards, read or listen to what your life is all about in the Lebensbaumkreis and wander around the woods behind it to find the quarries. Then walk on to Cobenzl and watch grannies nibble on their afternoon cakes.

Try amazing Sushi at Hidori in the 7th district, sample an authetic tarte au citron at Le Bol in the city center, reserve a table at Motto in the 5th district if you like it gay and sceney, go to the Schweizer Haus after a rollercoaster ride in the Prater and stuff youself with a Stelze.

More? Techno the night away at Sass, Prater Sauna or Fluc, go have a sausage at 4 o’ clock in the morning at the Würstelstad am Neuen Markt and on Saturdays, go to the fleemarket on Naschmarkt starting from 5 am to find some stuff you may never use again but that will always remind you of a great night. If you’re still not tired, walk towards the city on the Rechte Wienzeile and dance until noon in Goodmans (also try their Goulash, it might save your soul) or watch the nights leftovers and sidekicks at Cafe Drechsler trying to revive themselves with food and more beer.

If you have a car, eat a Schinken-Käse Kipferl and drink Soda-Himbeer-Zitron at Salettl in the 18th district and enjoy the never changing interior of that glass house or evesdrop on your neighbours conversation.

If you wanna spend some money, check out Lena Hoscheks fifties inspired clothes in the very pretty neighbourhood of the Spittelberg, see what the latest fashion is about in ubercool and superunfriendly Park, buy one of their self-designed leather bags at Pitti, browse through mainly french pret-a-porter in the small but well equipped Perfect Selection, find the perfect pair of sunglasses at Brillenmanufaktur in Neubaugasse or try on the exquisite hats at Mühlbauer. If your’re all shopped out, hide away at Loos Bar on a saturday afternoon and try their delicous Pimms Nr. 1.

In summer 2010, I was asked to create a certain look for the Luxury Online Shopping Club QVENDO, a young start-up selling european and american luxury brands to India via flash sales. There was no creative brief, so I was free to cast models that I felt would fit and also decided to work with photographer and good friend Christopher Klettermayer as well as talented Make-Up Artist Shlomit Migay.

Thanks to gorgeous weather, a shared vision on what the images should portray, we set out with models Johannes Göckler and beautiful Ewelina Horosz, both from lovely Alena at Body & Soul Modelagency.

ich bin 30 geworden, habe von neuem angefangen, tolle Jobs gemacht, sehr viel mit tollen menschen zusammengearbeitet, war in goa sylvester feiern, einen film machen in columbien, road trippen in den usa, island hopping in kroatien, beim burning man, habe in indien gearbeitet, habe das erste mal paintball gespielt, habe styling gemacht für fotoshoots, bin ungefähr 30.000 kilometer auto gefahren, habe verdammt viel geschrieben, war auf ein paar unglaublichen parties, bin zum ersten mal als trauzeugin auserkoren worden, habe meine nichte kennen und lieben gelernt, mit meinem bruder und meiner schwägerin zusammengearbeitet, viel zeit mit meinen eltern verbracht, ein neues start-up hochgezogen und das schönste: ich hab mich verliebt.

Ask yourself whether the dream of heaven and greatness should be waiting for us in our graves – or whether it should be ours here and now and on this earth.

Jeder bekommt gerne Geschenke. Punkt.

Und alle, die das Gegenteil behaupten, sind dreckige Lügner oder meine besonders geliebten Pseudo Altruisten, die ihr geringes Selbstwertgefühl darin ausdrücken, sich als nicht beschenkenswert und über-bescheiden darzustellen.  Die sagen: „Nein, nein, ich will ja gar nichts“, und gehen dann an Heiligabend aufs Klo um zu heulen weil nichts für sie unter dem Baum lag. Wer jetzt empört den Kopf schüttelt und „Falsch!“ schreit, der sollte erst mal  lesen, was ich zu dem Thema zu sagen habe und darf dann gerne danach seinen Senf in Form eines Kommentars dazugeben.

Hier sind mal ein paar Grundregeln fürs Schenken. Lesen, dann klappts auch mit dem Weihnachtsbaum und Keiner muss aufs Klo rennen zum heulen.

1. Der Gedanke zählt! Grundsätzlich kommt es darauf an, was sich der Schenker denkt, wenn er in einen Laden geht, um ein Geschenk zu kaufen, eines zu basteln oder sich sonst irgendwas auszudenken. Folgendes sollte dabei beachtet werden: Wenn man jemanden gut kennt, kennt man auch seine Hobbies, Vorlieben und sexuellen Neigungen. Sich danach zu richten, was der andere toll findet ist schon mal ein wichtiger Anfang, DENN beim schenken geht’s nicht darum, was man selbst toll findet. Wer Eigenschaften wie „Empathie“ oder „Emotionale Intelligenz“ nicht zu seinen starken Seiten zählt und sich nun fragt, was der zu Beschenkende toll finden könnte, der darf auch nachfragen. Es gibt tatsächlich noch Menschen wie mich, die sich ganz explizit Dinge wünschen. Kreativität ist super (und ja, braucht am meisten Zeit und deswegen ist sie ja auch super).
2. Schenke ohne zurückbeschenkt werden zu wollen! Genau wie auch in anderen Bereichen im Leben funktioniert das „Wie du mir, so ich dir-Prinzip“ meist eher schlecht bis beschissen. Wenn man jemandem etwas Gutes tun will, dann sollte man das tun weil man sich freut, diesem Menschen Freude zu bereiten. Schenken ist demnach also ein egoistischer Akt und hat wenig mit Altruismus zu tun. (Wer hier ein wenig Unterstützung braucht, dieses Prinzip zu verstehen, dem lege ich nahe, sich zu Weihnachten „The Fountainhead“ von Ayn Rand zu wünschen.)
3. Schenke nur, wenn du es wirklich willst! Worte wie MÜSSEN und PFLICHT haben beim Akt des Schenkens nichts zu suchen. Schlechtes-Gewissen-Geschenke sind eigentlich nicht so super, weil sie keinem der Involvierten Spaß machen. „Eigentlich“ sage ich, weil es manchmal unumgänglich ist, der Tante eine Flasche Wein mitzubringen oder der Kollegin einen blöden Schoko-Nikolaus auf den Tisch zu stellen. Das sind taktisch wichtige Züge, mit denen man sich sein Leben um vieles leichter gestalten kann. Ist vielleicht nicht ganz ehrlich, allerdings finde ich nicht, dass man sich dabei einen Zacken aus der Krone bricht denn es tut ja auch keinem weh. Merke: Wenn man jemandem mal nichts schenkt, ist das auch nicht schlimm. Das ist so wie mit der Zeit, die man mit einem Menschen verbringt: das sollte man ja auch wollen und nicht müssen.
4. Verpacke es schön! Wenn man Punkt 1 ernst nimmt, wird klar, dass man in so ein „richtiges“ Geschenk schon ein wenig Hirn-Schmalz und oft auch weite Wege oder große Mühen auf sich nimmt, um das Gewünschte rechtzeitig zu produzieren. Dann kann man sich auch Mühe geben, das Geschenk in bestmöglicher Form abzuliefern. Denn es zeigt, dass man sich Mühe gibt, dass man etwas wertschätzt und sich dafür auch Zeit genommen hat. (Und das lässt sich eins zu eins auf die Gefühle, die man für die beschenkte Person hegt, umlegen) Ich mache das dieses Jahr mit dem wunderschönen bunten Papier von DASUNO, bei Huber & Lerner in Wien erhältlich, aber ich bin da auch wirklich ziemlich perfektionistisch veranlagt.
5. Freut euch! Hallo, wir werden beschenkt und dürfen beschenken! Das bedeutet, dass es da draußen Menschen gibt, die man gern hat und auch welche, die einen gern haben. Das ist doch schon mal was. Außerem bedeutet es, dass wir Geld, Zeit oder beides haben um uns überhaupt über so ein Luxus-Produkt wie ein Geschenk den Kopf zu zerbrechen. DAS IST DOCH TOLL!

Und weil ich grad gedanklich voll im Geschenk-Taumel bin, gibts jetzt hier für die Problemfälle von euch noch ein Paar inspirierende Ideen:

- Zeit: ganz viele Menschen haben wenig Zeit füreinander und hätten gern mehr davon. Deswegen kann man denen etwas davon Schenken, zum Beispiel in Form von Flugtickets für ein gemeinsames Wochenende in Paris, Rom oder, wenn ihr dicke Geldbeutel habt, New York.

Lieber Winter,

schon lange eigentlich will ich dir einen Brief schreiben. Denke jetzt nicht, ich sei nachlässig weil das eine Weile gedauert hat, Tatsache ist, dass sie mich bisher einfach nicht geküsst hat, die liebe Frau Muse. In Bezug auf andere Themen schon aber nicht in Bezug auf dich.

Denn ich habe das Gefühl, dass auch sie mit dir auf Kriegsfuß steht, die Frau Muse. Die hängt wahrscheinlich gerade auf irgendeiner Couch und liest eine Bibliothek weil sie niemanden küssen will. Weil du eben nicht inspirierend bist, weil du Leben aufsaugst, statt gibst. Und genau das ist der Grund, warum ich nie dazu kam, dir zu sagen, dass ich dich überflüssig finde und dass es mich nervt, dass du schon wieder da bist.

Ist jetzt vielleicht nicht grad nett, aber let’s face it, wenn du mit deiner klammen Dunkelheit und deiner windigen Kälte daherkommst, vergeht einem die mentale Leichtigkeit. Wenn ich rausschaue aus dem Fenster, das jetzt immer geschlossen ist, dann sehe ich die Farbe grau, dann sehe ich Schneeregen und Menschen, die versuchen, vor dir zu fliehen. Und die schauen nicht glücklich aus, die Menschen, wahrscheinlich genausowenig wie ich.

Wenn ich daran denke, dass du jetzt die nächsten Monate hier neben und um uns bist, suche ich Checkfelix und Swoodoo heim und überlege mir, wie ich möglichst schnell und möglichst lang Abstand zu dir gewinnen kann. In der Beziehung erinnerst du mich an Matheschularbeiten damals.

Ich weiß, das ist vielleicht jetzt nicht fair, weil du dir schon Mühe gibst mit den Bergen und all dem Weiß, aber sind wir uns doch mal ehrlich: wann sehen wir denn diese Seite von dir? Nämlich so gut wie nie im Vergleich zu der Dunkelheit und der Farbe Grau. Du bist ja selten so lieb und lässt es auch in den Städten richtig schneien, so, das Schulbusse ausfallen und man sich theoretisch mit nem Schlitten an Autos hängen könnte. Hier machst du immer nur eine Mordssauerei und alles nass und gatschig.

Ich schreibe dir gerade jetzt, weil du es mir schwer machst, dich gern zu haben. Du bist nicht nett zu mir und ich mag dich nicht. Ganz ehrlich. Und es ist mir egal, ob du das jetzt hören willst, oder nicht, aber glaube mir: wenn ich mit jemandem reden könnte, der die Macht hätte, dich abzuschaffen würde ich das tun. Und zwar vorgestern.

A year ago I closed my eyes and imagined a bunch of crazy people in even crazier outfits. A year ago, I mistakenly imagined sand dunes when referring to the black rock desert in my mind. A year ago, after having seen images and film footage, I started thinking: I should definitely go there. But little did I know…

Then, on January 1st, most certainly after midnight, at some crazy beach in Goa, just having survived the bombardment of new years fire works (indian style is dangerous style) and a rather bumpy ride on a pick-up truck (of course I had to stand up, stretch my arms and scream: I am the king of the world. Or queen. Whatever.) my friend Horst (name changed by author) and I (the author) decided: let’s go. The fact that we still had a mere 9 months to go until the great burn didn’t put us off.

In early spring, Lissie (name also changed by the author) jumped on board and off we went, into the internet, into RV renting websites and into costume shops and make-up shops to find the appropriate gear, outfits, information and reservations we had to make in order to succeed and get to the desert in the middleofnowhere in nevada, USA. On time. We got excited in the „i don’t really believe that it’s really going to happen“ kinda way.

And then, one pretty sunny day in the end of august, the moment of departure was there. We hopped on a plane, all jolly and excited. (which reminds me that i wans’t so jolly and excited to begin with because I worked up until the wee morning hours until the cab came to pick me up to go to VIE)

When we got to San Francisco, we did some more shopping and stocked up on anything neon. On our 16 hour drive from San Fran to the Playa, we bought gallons of water, too much food and 3 used bikes. The boys at Reno Bike Project were cool even tho we were late and I instantly fell in love with my yellow BMX with flames in the side. By 4 am, we finally hit the Playa, the grounds on which Burning Man is to take place every year. Lissie was fast asleep and Horst and I fell uncnscious right after we parked the car in the middle of a marked camp. We didn’t just not care about the spot being marked but we were also too tired to drive around more. The next morning the guys of the camp (unfortunately I don’t remeber their names, they had a rad art car in the shape of a blowfish, so guys, if you read this: thanks for having us, highly appreciated) figured we were cool and the fact that we had come all the way from Austria must have worked some magic, too. So they let us stay and we shared Manner Schnitten with them.

Now my text has to change tone because I want to make a point. Burning Man was fantastic. And I mean fantastic in a people, music, visual, adventurous kinda way. And I don’t care if some foul and narrow-minded folks say that it’s become oh so commercial because now there is 50.000 people who go there, because I think that the right kinda 50.000 people are not to be judged condescendingly.

To set the image I had a year ago straight:

- crazy people in even crazier outfits: check

- sand dunes: not check

To add a few things to that very limited list:

-        really cool people who were very friendly in a not clingy kinda way: check

-        a lot of neon lights at night that makes your heart sing: check

-        beautiful and breathtaking sunsets and rises: check

-        dancing in the middle of the day out of pure happiness: check

-        inspiring everything: check

-        a lot of laughter with random strangers: check

-        truly inspiring art: check

-        incredible dubstep dj sets: check

-        general happiness: check

-        believing in the somehwat utopic set-up: check

Miu Miu tut es, Gucci sogar mit Superstar Regisseur Chris Cunningham, die spanische Accessoire Marke Uterqüe macht es, auch das junge Berliner Label Gretchen tut es. Die Rede ist von Film, Fashion Film, um genau zu sein. Mode wird nicht mehr nur durch Fotostrecken dargestellt – die Fashion Houses sind auf den Geschmack gekommen, für ihre Brands und neuen Kollektionen faszinierende Bewegtbild- und Klangwelten zu schaffen. Bilderstrecken waren gestern, oder treten in den Hintergrund. Es gibt mittlerweile ganze Ausstellungen die nur Filme zeigen, Storytelling erlebt eine Renaissance und Dibond und Acrylglas werden durch Leinwände ausgetauscht. Models müssen mittlerweile außer gut aussehen auch noch richtig schauspielen.

Die Mode bewegt sich immer mehr, und zwar nicht nur über den Laufsteg sondern nun auch über unsere Bildschirme. Ein ganz neuer Film-Markt, den auch immer mehr smarte Filmemacher für sich entdecken und auf digitale Filmproduktion umsatteln. In Zeiten der Canon 5D Mark II und der Red kein Thema mehr, gedreht wird auf HD, das sowohl auf Youtube gut kommt als auch hochauflösend genug für die Leinwand und für Visuals ist. Transportiert wird ein Image, untermalt mit dem passenden Sound, der extra für de jeweiligen Film produziert wurde.

Außerdem sind die Fashion-Filme, selbst wenn sie aufwändig produziert werden, immer noch um vieles günstiger, als 20 sekündige TV-Spots. Übers Internet verbreiten sich die Filme, soweit sie gut gemacht sind, ganz von selbst und machen Image. Trendtools wie das iPad, übergreifende Glasfaser-Netze und facebook und twitter tun ihr übriges.

Sogar Festivals gibt es schon, wie das A Shaded View On Fashion Film Festival von Online Stil-Ikone Diane Pernet, die die neue Art des Films bewerten und in einen künstlerischen Kontext präsentieren. Denn künstlerisch sind sie, die 30 bis 300 sekündigen Fenster in die Welt einer Luxus-Marke.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

When I first met Helmut von Loebell in 2010, I was instantly struck by the sense of power about this man. And I mean not power in the sense of “having power over people in order to control them and getting a kick out of it” but power in the sense of sheer will power and the power to realise things.
It was clear instantly that he was a doer, a mover, someone who does not fuss around but just gets on with it. And the man was 73 years old at that time. A striking intensity, his large frame, a sturdy and very prussian background, strong rhetorical skills and an overall tonge-in-cheek sense of humor added to his appearance.

The reason I met him was that Benedikt, one of his sons and a dear friend, told me about a project his father had founded in 2002 and was since then supporting – CES Waldorf. Up to that moment, I had not actively been involved in charities of any kind. This kind of work had just never crossed my path and I wasn’t looking for it as I was struggling to make ends meet as a young entrepreneur myself.
But when Helmut told me about his project in such a nonchalant way and answered my question: “Why do you do this?” with “I never really thought about it. I just do it. Other people play golf. So you could say this is my hobby.” he already got me.
I was never a friend of people who do good for the sake of applause and a place in heaven.
But this tall vibrant man won my heart over in an instant cause I knew he was real, his motives were the only valid ones to do charity.

He just likes to be able to do things, influence people positively. Why? Cause he can.

SIERRA MORENA

When we first met, he found himself in the position to need help for the first time. He was getting older, his business in Colombia was slow and the existence of CES Waldorf was suddenly in danger as he wasn’t able to fund it in the way he used to. And I could tell that he disliked this situation; aksing for help didn’t come to him easily. He was ususally the one aksed for help.
So I went to Bogota, made a film for his daycare house in the middle of one of the most dangerous places in the world, Sierra Morena, in Ciudad Bolivar, where people not only live in bare shacks but are constantly threatened by the guerrillas, the para militaries, the police and plenty other groups and gangs that are the reality of colombian politics. There is war on the streets of Sierra Morena, and the air is thick with fear.
And right in the middle of this, there is a colorful house with rooms that are filled with laughter and the smell of healthy food. This house is a place of hope for about 220 children who come here to kindergarten or take part in the PAES program, which was designed to keep school kids off the streets and give them a realm to play and experience childhood, something they can often not do at home.

DOING IT

I asked my friend Maria Trieb, gifted camera and film lady, to join, and in april 2010, we flew to Bogota and saw what’s going on there, talked to many people, teachers, kids and their parents to find out what this project was all about. I was rather unprepared for what it would be like and yes, I was often silent and just listened, moved, desperate and also incredibly happy to see such an oasis in a hopeless surrounding. This is why I decided to help in my humble ways, in order to keep this place that is so important to the kids and their families up and running. They have their own facebook page and a new website.

And I want to dance and I want to laugh and I want to share all that I feel and I mean, really share it, with people who are willing to share, too And I want to do things and I want to move forward and I want to be moved and be real with those around me And I want to feel my heart beat because of the sheer joy of being alive and I want to make things happen because there is no other way And I want to succeed with the things I care about and I want to be proud of my accomplishements and I want to jump high and believe in a safe landing And I want to show others who I am and i want to stop pretending because I absolutely have no reason to And I want to love fulheartedly without fear because life should never be governed by fear And I want to make decisisions based on my own understanding of how things should work and I want to defy evil and cry my eyes out because sometimes my system needs that And I want to hold hands and listen to others and give comfort And I want to take care of my body and treat it well because it is all I have and I want to be kind to my heart because it it is gentle and one shouldn’t fuck around with a heart too much And I want to be surprised by the days and I want to speak my mind and I want to discuss matters madly and I want to breathe the air and feel life pulsate through my body And I don’t want to complicate things as it is all quite simple really and I know I just have to listen to myself And I want to tell my stories and I want to write them down and I want to sing out loud even tho I can’t sing and run free and fast and step lightly on the ground and look forward to tomorrow and the day after and even to 2039 and have children one day And I want to give love to my family and be there for them and tell them how much they mean to me And I want to learn more and see things wide eyed and open mouthed and go on adventure trips and see the world and help more people who are not as fortunate as I am And I want to understand things and myself and others And I want to touch and be touched and I want to be a smartass at times because I can And I want to make crazy theories about life and the universe and I want to let go more and trust, yeah, trust in myself because the more I trust in myself the more I will become who I want to be now, tomorrow and in the future and that will lead me to doing the things I really want to do And I want to be faithful to what I say and trust my gut feeling and faithful to those I love and I want to earn their trust And I want to slowdance and I want to run barefoot in the rain and eat icecream at midnight And I want to expect very little and thus always be surprised how amazing everything works out in the end And I want to drive through the jungle in a jeep and I want to go horseriding again because horses always made me happy And I want to be curious and meet people that are totally different and talk about music and dance more And I want to be strong and I want to cope with those stones in my path because there will always be some but that is normal And I want to do this all now, always, because there is no time to lose and because I just want it.

Well, I was ganna write a lengthy story about this whole road trip shebang, but oddly I still lack the inspiration to write at length. This might be du to my toight schedules at present which also have their share affecting my nocturnal wake-time. Meaning: I am too tired. But I took some rather awsome pitchas and my new blog design sucks and it should all be more colorful. I miss color. This weather is doing my head in and I must say, after a spring from hell, I do really want to believe in climate change and heat waves at any given time of year. ja, auch für mich gibt es grenzen.

Since I have been closely working with Andreas Waldschuetz on various things, such as MUSIC IS VIENNA and SAND PEOPLE (look out, this one is gonna be a stunner, coming soon!) I also got a chance recently to play dress ups with amazing looking Carmen Solomons straight outta Cape Town. What came out was this and some shmancey fashiony magazine liked it and they’re gonna print it now.

Ich habe eine Verpflichtung gegenüber meinen Talenten.

Ja, so ist das richtig – in der Theorie, und nicht nur bezogen auf Schmerz. Ich verurteile die abendländische Auffassung, alles wirkich Bedeutsame könne nur in Schmerz und Leid erlebt, ausgedrückt werden und letztendlich valide erscheinen. Der emotionale AHA-Effekt ist ebenso stark in Momenten des Glücks, der absoluten Erfüllung. Nur ist diese viel schwerer zu teilen, mitzuteilen. Sei es aus dem Neid, der von diesen Momenten in Anderen hervorgerufen wird oder aus der schieren Unmöglichkeit, derartige Momente nicht kitschig und oberflächlich sprachlich wieder zu geben. Eine große Hilfe hierbei ist es, allgemein gelernte Bilder zu nutzen, Filme enstehen zu lassen und somit Parabeln zu schaffen um Emotionen zu transportieren.

so süß ist das verlangen nach zu hause, der sinn nach frisch entzündeten kerzen, so gemütlich der gedanke an die weichheit des eigenen bettes, an den geruch von frisch gewaschenen laken, der geborgenheit eines ortes, den man selbst gestaltet, so vertraut das öffnen der eigenen tür, wie ein guter freund sagt meine wohnung hallo, lässt mich zurück in mein leben.

I’m superexposed to many forms of media, apart from TV which is only good for falling asleep, that I often discover really pretty things and then I talk about them exitedly and have no way of retreiving their source in my overcrowded head. Very unfortunate.

Magazines, Websites, Platforms, so much radness out there!

The internet is too fast and too full sometimes and I constantly lose things, links, articles, ladida, also because I still haven’t really made friends with Delicious (I currrently don’t even remember the email adress I used to log in which sucks). So I often find myself looking through old tweets or the facebook walls of friends or even emails to find some stuff that I happened to stumble across a while ago and want to find again.

So here you go, share my enthusiasm for those….

MONOCLE

The subscription I got for my bday, still waiting for the first issue to hit my postbox. Can’t wait, a lot of japanese stuff, a lot of english stuff and overall very pretty and out there. They don’t limit themselves at Monocle – the high gloss mag includes topics like Business, Design, Culture, Affairs and also Edits, which deal with all kinds of new stuff, inventors and travel. (Love)

You’re a creative director at an ad agency or need someone to do some illustrations for your next music video? Where to look for the right people? My work for photographer and visual artist Andreas Waldschuetz has caused me to surf the web in sleepless nights in order to find platforms that cater as a meeting point for artists and industry, and eventually, creating a business case. But like artists, most of these platforms don’t really get a lot of exposure in the media (especially not in the midget country Austria) as they are made by artists and don’t always have a strong business model to back them up. Out of all of them, there are two platforms that I have found to be truly inspirational:

Behance Network

The Behance Network is a creative thinktank and gives room for all artists, from acrobats to web designers, to showcase their work, interact and make connections, within the network and also for those looking for talent from the “real world”. It’s an invitation only platform, you can also apply to get in and once you’re there, show them what you got. I found some amazig stuff and via the job section, we’ll soon be looking for a graphic designer that’s gonna help us make a pretty rad photo project, shot in Namibia in the end of 2009 look really really ridiculously good. I’m positive we’ll find someone….

L’EXPOSURE

Similar approach to creativity, yet anyone can join. It’s still in it’s Beta phase, but already now has some great talent to be found. It’s also better optimised for google (I found out about that when I googled Andreas) than Behance and it offers a very pretty and well done magazine part that features also some of the artists that are in the network.

Oh, Brand Eins, I do feel sorry for all those who can’t read german. Such an amazing, brave and smart magazine, a monthly for that matter, that I read religiously like a book, refer to it, share it’s articles, of which many are also available online. Even my mum loves it now and my dad got a subscription. It mixes all sorts of topics, politics, art, branding, advertising and philosophy and does not draw lines in between them, which is the best cause it reflects the decentralised approach to life and work that I believe in myself. It’s design is simple and unfussy, it’s core the written word. And thy even put that into audio, you can download podcasts for free if you have a subscription and listen to them on long boring stints on the motorway or at the airport.

One of the tasks I have set for myself for this century is publishing an article with brand eins, I just have to get round to finding the right topic and persuadig them of it’s relevance. peanuts

The Sixty One

A lovechild of music meeting fans. Young artists have the opportunity to put their music on here and make cash by selling records. What struck me most with this website is it’s beauty, simple handling and, of course, the hearts. I have a thing for hearts. It’s great to explore music that is brand new, and amongst others there are filters for “hot”, “top” and “moods”. Great, just great.

SELF SERVICE

This pretty number comes out twice a year and has reserved a sure spot on a worthy coffee table. A true beauty, especially the art work font-wise makes my heart leap with joy. Such a good thing that there are people who believe in visual beauty and style. Self Service brings style, the work of amazing photographers, outstading travel destinations all wrapped up nicely in a hard cover.

Well, last week we did a party, a costume party to be precise. Since the whole thing was a totally out-of-the-blue event, we didn’t manage to organise a DJ and I ended up playig music, from iTunes mixed with youtube videos. Not at all an artistic approach to dejaying, but what could I do? So this guy I hardly know comes up to me, looking pitiful at my attempts to create smooth change-overs from one song to the next, terribly failing. He asks me if I know twoyoutbevideosandamotherfuckingcrossfaderdotcom. I say “huh?” and frown. He shows me. The evening ended being a musical fairytale and i love that they used such a ridiculously long URL. WHAM!

First of all, I LOVE the word DOUCHEBAG. You can change it, to Douche, Douchey, use it as a noun or an adverb “Fuck, you’re so douchey”, or even prolong it: Douchebaguette.

I was once again doing about a gazillion of things simultaneously today (today being one of those days when i CAN do them simoultaneously, maybe cause I got a solid 8 hour sleep last night, the first time since the early 70s) and one of them was browsing the web for all sorts of amazing things that always make me so happy. Sometimes I wish that people were as versatile as the internet. It would probably be a bit stressful cause everyone would change topic every 20 seconds or so, but it would be extremely interesting and colorful. Until we all go mad.

Anways, I found this hall of fame thing and here are some textual gems that i discovered.

It happened. Santa heard my desperate cries for Snow Leopard, he felt my desire for realtime editing and, eventually, my need to move on and finally get Photo Booth and the access to visual real-time communication via Skype. (remember, the g4 didn’t have a camera installed)

After 7 years of true and heartfelt companionship cum mutual understanding, I send you, dear G4 to Mac-heaven. It’s been fun, you gave ma lot of happiness in the form of Photoshop CS, an extensive iTunes library and you never really let me down. You swallowed all those word docs without complaints,

let me write letters filled with a multifacetted rainbow of emotional spillage and never tired to provide a suffiecient platform to surf the web. I know I wasn’t always fair, spilling coffee over your keypad or dropping you so your once flawless aluminium case got dented was not exactly nice. But overall, we had a great time I think.

Thank you. Now I got hold of a grandson of yours. I’m sure he’ll give me as much pleasure as you have given me in return for electrical currents.

war grad mal wieder da, hat sich nichts geändert – weder an der stadt, noch an meiner engstirnigen, aus frühester kindheit geprägten haltung ihr gegenüber. deswegen dieser text hier, schon vor 2 jahren geschrieben und nach wie vor applicable.

Ha, ich weiss jetzt, was falsch ist an München. Die Stadt hat einfach keinen SEX.

München ist die nette Nachbarin von nebenan, immer hübsch zurecht gemacht und frisch gebügelt, immer freundlich und angepasst. Sauber, aufgeräumt, mit offenem aber langweiligem Gesicht, wäre München eine Person, würde sie Heidi Klum oder Claudia Schiffer heißen, wobei Claudia besser passt. Ohne Kanten, ohne düstere Schatten unter den Augen, vielleicht vom Wetter erzählend oder vom letzten FCB Spiel.
München ist eine sinnvolle Stadt, ein Wahrzeichen des gehobenen Mittelstands, der ganz gern das Maul hält, bloss, um den Frieden zu bewahren. Eine Burg der Unaufgeregtheit, gänzlich ohne Pauken und Trompeten.

München wird dich nie offen angreifen, sondern eher mit perlweissen Zähnen ins Grab langweilen. Eine Stadt, die gern behauptet, sie wäre groß obwohl ihr jegliche Konsequenz fehlt. Wo man ab 23 uhr still sein muss weil keiner seinen Dämmerschlaf verlassen will, wo die Innenstadt durch Fußgängerzonen ins nächtliche Aus befördert wurde.

Da, wo die Menschen schon Montags wissen (wollen), was bis Sonntag Abend passiert. Auf den Strassen überall Barbie-Menschen, hübsch fürs Auge aber leerleerleer, keine Fragen stellend, angewachsen an einen Strom, den sie nicht selbst gewählt haben. Der Strom, in dem hauptsächlich Äußerlichkeiten zählen, wo jeder weiß, wieviel PS ein Cayenne Turbo hat und wieviel der Quadratmeter im Herzogpark kostet. Wo investmentbanker und Schrebergärten eine Rolle spielen.

Finally came across “Henry and June” last night. I am certain that it took me so long to hold this piece of literature in my hand as before I would have not been ready for it.  Haven’t gotten this excited about a book in a long time and even though I was desperately tired physically, had to coninue reading. How direct the language, how precise her perception, how detailed her description of characters that is solely based on curiosity and a refined natural gift for fatctual and emotional oberservation. And fearlessness that has the strong backbone of a multi-shaded and confident mind. I am thrilled and simoultaneously filled with the desire to venture out and find extreme characters – creators – that can teach me a thing or two about life because they share my passion for it.

touched base. it was wonderful, once again. loved the freedom, no phones, no computers, no time. just now.
maybe i will find my way into living like that on a everyday basis down the road. way down the road in a matter of fact. i guess one has to earn a life like that, first we need to get quite a few other things out of our systems. but it’s definately on my future radar. where, with whom and how, i have no idea. but knowing there is a haven of peace within my heart is already a pretty fucken good prospect. it means i can go there when the time is right.

Meine WingWoman Chrissi sitzt gerade neben mir und wir haben uns gedacht, dass wir mal ein bisschen 30jährige Mädchenweißheit mit euch teilen. Wir wissen, dass ihr durch die Emanzipation ordentlich pussyslapped wurdet und es tut uns ehrlich leid, dass es da so ein paar Hardcore Killer Bitches gibt, die euch anschreien, wenn ihr die Rechnung zahlen wollt, oder euch den Mantel, in den ihr ihnen gerade helfen wolltet aus den Händen reißen. Oder einfach grußlos euer Bett verlassen nachdem ihr eine wunderbare Nacht zusammen verbracht habt (ohne euch noch in irgendeiner Form fühlen zu lassen, wie großartig ihr wart). ABER diese Damen sind kein Maßstab. Ehrlich. Und wenn sie’s für euch sind, dann ist das euer Problem, vielleicht sucht ihr ja in Wirklichkeit eine Mami oder jemanden, der euch metrosexuellen Bürschlein zeigt, wo der Hammer hängt.

Allerdings seid ihr durch ebendiese Emanzipation auch ziemlich verwöhnt – die Damen schmeißen sich ja heutzutage auch an jeden hin, der optisch nicht als Problemfall gilt. Das macht das ganze Daten oft hinfällig und killt euren Jagdinstinkt, den wir, ganz ehrlich wirklich uneingeschränkt toll finden. Denn Mann + Jagdinstinkt = Mut. Und Mut ist so ziemlich das sexieste, was es gibt, in Verbindung mit dem Mangel an Angst, verlieren zu können macht er euch nahezu umwerfend. Da ist es dann gar nicht so wichtig, dass eure Augen nicht sommerhimmeldunkelblau sind und ihr keinen Porsche fahrt. (hehe)

Was uns besonders den Atem raubt, ist es, für euch unwiderstehlich zu sein. Ob das jetzt in einer 3Jahres Beziehung ist, in einer 40Jährigen Ehe oder eben nur für die Dauer eines Kusses. Das ist das Salz in der Suppe. Wenn also einer kommt, und nicht ganz klar macht, wie unwiderstehlich er uns findet, macht ihn das schon mal zu einem Wackelkandidaten. Wir meinen natürlich nicht, dass ihr jetzt auf Knien gerutscht kommen sollt, denn auch Unterwürfigkeit und eine wie auch immer leicht durch Verzweiflung gefärbte Anhänglichkeit ist vollkommen INDISKUTABEL.

Deswegen hier eine kleine Liste von Dingen, die euch Hinweise gibt, wie ihr es schafft, dass nicht mal Drum ‘n Bass mit unseren Herzen Schritt hält oder einfach nur das zu kriegen, was ihr wollt. Ist uns heute Nachmittag eingefallen und wir haben da recht stringente Vorstellungen.

- Viele Wege führen zu uns. Wien ist ein inzestiöses Kaff und es kann ja nicht so schwer sein, ein bisschen investigativ zu werden, gilt natürlich auch für alle anderen Städte. Es ist nicht aufdringlich, (auch über Dritte) unsere Nummer rauszufinden und einfach mal anzurufen, wenn wir es aufdringlich finden sagen wir das schon, aber sicher nicht ohne eine gewisse Achtung vor eurem Mut. Ich persönlich mag Briefe sehr gern, das liegt daran, dass ich einfach total drauf stehe, wenn jemand schriftlich eloquent sein kann.

(Tipp: Clubs sind nicht unbedingt der richtige Ort, sich kennenzulernen. Man kann ja meist gar nix hören und es ist spät und stinkig und betrunken. Anschaun ja, toll finden auch, aber es ist viel besser, sich auf ein Date zu verabreden. Wir gehen in die Disko, um zu tanzen, Kennenlernen ist für Restaurants, Parks oder Cafes, Bars auch) Außerdem ist Vorfreude was ganz besonders Nettes das ihr euch zunutze machen solltet.

- Kontaktaufnahme: Ansprechen ist gut, aber plumpe Sprüche gehen gar nicht. Intelligenz und Kreativität sind dabei leider notwendig, also ein gewisses Gefühl für die Romantik eines Moments. Wenn keine der beiden Attribute auf euch zutreffen, tut uns das leid, aber da kann man dann wohl nix machen. Ansprechen ist sogar wirklich verdammt wichtig, das blöde Anstarren an der Bar ist vollkommen teenageesque und auch um uns rumtigern in der Hoffnung, dass wir euch vielleicht ansprechen ist lahm. Denkt an diesem Punkt wieder an die gute alte Jagdsituation – der Bär ergibt sich auch nicht einfach von selbst. Es gibt keinen richtigen Moment, nur den Willen, uns kennen zu lernen, der Zeitpunkt ist jetzt. Fahrt mal nach Buneos Aires und schaut euch an, wie die das machen, die habens drauf. Und das auch noch ohne gleich needy oder einfach nur notgeil zu wirken. (auch wenn ihrs seid, was ja per se nichts schlechtes ist, muss man das ja nicht gleich so raushängen lassen)

- 2 Kontaktaufnahme: Skype und facebook sind toll, vorallem zum rumblödeln mit Freunden. Wenn ihr mit uns auf ein Date gehen wollt, sind wir aber vielleicht noch keine Freunde – es ist was ganz anderes, wenn man sich mit einem Kumpel über den Fb chat auf ein Bier verabredet, als ein Date auszumachen. Also, anrufen! Und wir mögen es natürlich auch sehr, überrascht zu werden, es gibt nichts Beschisseners als einen Typen, der anruft und um ein Date bittet und nicht mal einen Plan hat, wie das Ganze vonstatten gehen soll. Sucht ein nettes Lokal aus, fragt, was wir mögen, schlagt was vor, seid kreativ, denkt an das Wetter. Ist nicht so schwer, wir können das auch.

- Manieren: In den Mantel helfen, Türen aufhalten (ja, auch die Autotür) und Feuer geben ist toll. Wir mögen das, denn es zeigt uns, dass ihr aufmerksam und an unserem Wohlbefinden interessiert seid. Das sollte allerdings nicht ausarten, ihr müsst nicht durch den ganzen Raum hechten, um vor uns an der Tür zu sein. Was ihr euch merken solltet ist folgendes: auch wenn wir unglaublich fähig sind, unseren Alltag allein zu meistern finden wir es doch auch ganz wunderbar, uns umhegen zu lassen und manchmal auch ein bisschen schwach zu sein. Mädis halt.

-  Klare Ansagen sind sexy. (siehe oben das, was wir zum Thema Mut geschrieben haben) Seht das Ganze vielleicht ein bisschen als ein Verkaufsgespräch. Wenn man ein Auto verkaufen will, sagt man auch nicht, dass es eine lahme Krücke ist und vielleicht noch keinen Unfall hatte. Sagt uns klar, was ihr wollt (uns), vollkommen egal, ob ihr uns kennenlernen wollt, einen Kuss möchtet oder einen Ehering an unseren Finger stecken wollt. Vollkommen Wurst. Alles was zählt ist der Moment und Chancen gibt’s nicht in der Größe einer Familienpackung.

- Man kann auch eine wunderbare Zeit haben (1 Minute bis 50 Jahre), ohne gleich emotional zu werden. Auch wir können das, das ist kein Ammenmärchen, sondern die nackte Wahrheit. Das bedeutet, man kann auch für eine Nacht vollkommen verknallt sein, ohne sich danach je wieder zu sehen und das ist auch für Mädels kein Problem, trust us. Wer mutig ist, hat keinen Schiss, und wer keinen Schiss hat, lässt sich ein. Ob das ein Sprung aus dem Flugzeug ist oder uns auf einen Drink einzuladen. Man weiß ja nie, was kommt, das ist ja das schöne an Begegnungen und wer offen ist, wird Offenheit zurückbekommen.

- Was danach kommt, weiß der Geier. So wie bei allem im Leben. Forza!

So, jetzt isses soweit. Das Jahr ist gelaufen. (Gottseidank)  So gut wie, noch ein paar Dinge sind zu erledigen, in erster Linie, meinen Rucksack zu packen und morgen in einen Flieger zu steigen. Zum Freiluft schnuppern, Flügel strecken, Sehen, Staunen, Probieren. Und dann wieder zurückkommen, denn ich weiß jetzt wo ich hingehöre.

Last week, I once again visited one of my favorite cities that is Berlin. It was all about staying with wonderful Marie, who is also talented film maker Crocodilopolis in her borrowd flat mitten in Mitte and talk all night. There I was tempted to take some pictures (see below).

Also, I met up with Timmi to talk about some sort of collaboration for freunde von freunden, an online magazine featuring interviews with all sorts of creative people. We’ll see what happens with that…

You did, too, maybe you are still there. I always saw it and I warned you, knowing you would never give a damn about my words. I saw where you were going by the way you looked at each other.
I envied you and pittied you deeply simultaneously. Cause it’s the best. The most dangerous, the most thrilling. Totally removed from reality and at the same time the most real thing you’ll probably ever feel. It’s all the desire, the lust, the passion, the longing, the greed, and even the addiction this world has to offer. Manifested in one single person, in one single instant. It’s something you can’t touch and simply forget, one can’t walk through fire without getting burned.

This feeling, it will stay. If you don’t manage to accept the loss, it will always sit in the back of your head and just when you think you are free of it, that you can again look at things the way you did before, unthawed, it  will strike at you, it will suffocate you and make you stumble, leave you unable to believe the heartwrenching size of this massive LACK in your life. This lack, this everything-shaped black hole sometimes makes you want to get out of your skin, the fear of never flying with the stars again almost crushes you, because, even if you hate to admit it, if you wish it away with all your might, even if you curse it, burn it, throw it away, erase it from the physical world, it will never, ever again leave you alone. It’s now a part of you. It’s like losing a leg, or growing a third one, depending on the way you chose to see it.

You are now a different person.

Welcome to my world.

Now you can keep on fighting, kicking, screaming, trying to numb yourself, running, cursing, crying, and still, it will be there. The lack. The hole, the emptiness.
Because it’s a part of you. It took me quite some time to not only think but feel that, end eventually, believe it.
The only way you can now live is to embrace it, to accept it and that way learn how to live with it.
It opened your eyes and tought you to see something beautiful, something so strong and immensly extraordinary. You went there, knowing that it would hurt, knowing that it would change your life forever. I guess most people will never experience something like that because they are simply not capable of such profound emotions. They might not recognize heaven when it’s right in front of them and if they do, they will chose to turn around, run away, from the thing they desire most just because they’re so scared of losing it.
And that’s a million times worse. To be scared, to live a mediocre live. To let fear govern your desires.
It may sound weird, but I am happy you experienced this. Because in the end, these people that twist your world inside out, these feelings you experience by going all the way are THE ONLY THINGS IN LIFE THAT REALLY MATTER.

In 2007, I wanted to open my own online store for fashion accessories. Unfortunately, I was unlucky enough to end up with a totally unprofessional and horrible web agency who took a lot of money from me and never finished the job… But at least, really pretty pictures came out.

Facebook, twitter and all the other social web-things bring a lot of news to our eyes and ears. Since I am a bit of a sucker for music, I couldn’t help but stumble across the hypemachine, a tool that scans blogs for new music. And it so does the trick, all fresh and so clean! I totally fell for that tool simply because I dig discovering – a lot of the stuff is really unheard of in the online music store near you.

The guy behind the hype, Anthony, happened to appear in our Vienna office a few weeks ago, because he virtually befriended Lukas, a dear collegue of mine. Of course I had to leap at the chance of talking to him on his little stop-over during an extensive trip around good old europe.We sat down and I started asking…

AvQ: Hey Anthony, pleasure to meet you! You’re only 23 years old and already managed to pull off a pretty amazing stint as a music slash internet guru. That’s pretty impressive – how did it all start?

Anthony: Well, I was at Uni, it was the year 2005 and I was really bored with music, frustrated at the IT work I was doing then and basically wanted to improve either one of those two, uhm, situations. Myspace was kinda messy and magazines and radio didn’t do it for me cause they were just not edgy and up-to-date enough. So I sat down, looked around and started to find gazillions of music blogs that held a lot of real gems and showed a high level of knowledge and some really cool shit.

AvQ: So, then you just built the hypemachine?

Anthony: Not straight away, I first used writing code as an excuse to escape uni-work, it was an ideal way to procrastinate. Then I came up with a first, very simple machine, that could already aggregate music from blogs. And many people thought it was cool. It kept me going through a shitty semester and once I missed a pretty important physics exam cause I did pull a few all-nighters to get hypemachine on track. I told the professor why I missed the exam and he liked what I was doing. All that made me wanna take things a lot further.

AvQ: How did you come up with the name then?

Anthony: That came totally natural. I mean, you take what’s happening in the music world, that strong trend of indie music and people coming from who knows where with really awsome stuff and and find a way to automise it. A machine that show’s what’s hip. Hypemachine. We want people to access what’s new – not in the old fashioned top-down way, but in the way it’s really happening today.

AvQ: There’s more music on blogs than  in So what kinda music can we find on hypem.com?

Anthony: Definitely not the artists that really want to be there… Indie Rock, Electro, Techno, not the stuff that gets a lot of airplay. People writing music blogs are usually totally in love with what they do, so we want to give everybody a chance who can prove prime insight into whatever genre floats his/her boat. But bloggers have to apply cause we want to keep the standard high. So Zoya, a friend who went to college with me, was really into the music as well and started picking the blogs cause there were so many.

AvQ: and today…?

Anthony: Today, hypem.com has around 250.000 registered users, and about 1,5 Million unique visitors per month. We kept the initial design and it became a pretty strong brand. So we started doing merhandise like T-Shirts and rad necklaces made from vinyl. It’s really starting to roll and by integrating twitter, we introduced a cool new feature: if you link hypem to your twitter account, the songs you love show up in your twitter feed and even create charts. All that is happening now is amazing, and I’m fascinated* that a passion turned into an actual business!

I am in the comfortable situation of living in the western world, of having had the time and resources to study and READ, working in a parallel universe, I deal with something everyday that is made up of a massive amount of 0′s and 1′s, so what do you expect? Sometimes it makes me feel a little schizzophrenic, but that’s ok.

I believe in information.

Some german blogger kids came up with an Internet-Manifesto that I really liked. It’s about how we made the internet, how it changed a lot of things and how now it has become a part of us. And how it won’t go away and how we should stop complaining that things are not what they used to be. Thank god!

The Internet is the victory of information.

Murdoch and his folks can sit together and make little plans on how they can bring back the past – it’s not gonna happpen. Back when people needed to buy information expensively, had to believe in what they were told by paper. Cause now that’s all kinda different. It’s not like there is no more cash to made in the info-biz, you just have to go about it a lot smarter than just writing some nifty little articles.

Tradition is not a business model.

Tough, but true. Now we have the great chance to use the crisis and the fact that a lot of lame, boring and uninventive leeches are dropping off the leg of sucess. Let’s do it.

Who knows how to make love stay?

1. Tell love you are going to the Junior’s Deli on Flatbush Avenue in Brooklyn to pick up a cheesecake, and if love stays, it can have half. It will stay.
2. Tell love you want a memento of it and obtain a lock of its hair. Burn the hair in a dime-store incense burner with yin/yang symbols on three sides. Face southwest. Talk fast over the burning hair in a convincingly exotic language. Remove the ashes of the burnt hair and use them to paint a mustache on your face. Find love. Tell it you are someone new. It will stay.
3. Wake love up in the middle of the night. Tell it the world is on fire. Dash to the bedroom window and pee out of it. Casually return to bed and assure love that everything is going to be all right. Fall asleep. Love will be there in the morning.

Still lacking inspiration for putting more than 500 characters down in one go, I am posting some more pictures. Some I have resently found again and still like. They were done for some ad or special print thing during the football europe cup last year.

this is certainly a catchy picture. als i have neither time nor inspiration to write any story at the moment. so pictures will have to make do. but as long as they are as great as this particular one, i am ok with that. (while looking at it i can come up with at least 15 people who would totally write something like that next to the door of their girl/boy) which is kind of ridiculous really.

Well, this was 2004, october and novemeber, to be precise. But even if it’s been a while, it was still one of the most memorable trips I have undertaken (yet!). I’m  quite resistant to trends, always have been. The reason for me not to follow certain tendencies was never a general mindset, but whatever was trendy had to make sense to me somehow. Ed Hardy T-Shirts, Bikkenberg Sneakers, Freitag Bags or neon colored skinny Jeans make me want to throw up.

Unlike the iPhone. Everyone has one now, considering that Orange and T-Mobile throw them at you for dumping prices. (here in Austria, that is) Weirdly, I seem to be following a certain pattern when it comes to Mac products or maybe even technical gadgets in general. I don’t like to spend a lot of money on things I don’t desperately need, like shoes or plane tickets.  And I have an inbuilt animosity towards buying something that is outdated the next day. So I wait. And I watch.

Way back I was watching other people use their ipod. I bought my first one in 2002, terribly late, considering I was one of the few girls in my hood to use iTunes. (This might be due to the fact that I have always been a faithful apple customer)

Enough is enough, I want one now. So I am sitting here, terribly excited, waiting for my first iPhone. I ordered the 32 Gig one, cause I am constantly in need of more storage space which is growing proportinally to the amount of content I produce, at work as well as in the wee hours. But those people at T-Mobile can’t deliver which makes really rather angry.

Wie ein Virus breiten sich Netzwerke und Kommunikationsformen aus, Twitter hier, facebook da, poke rechts, skype links. Die Kommunikationsbranche ist euphorisch: Ist Twitter die neue Tageszeitung und ein hübscher Youtube Film das neue Werbefenster, dass schnell und billig ein Produkt an den Mann bringt?

“Das hört sich ja alles spielerisch und lustig an”, freuen sich die Werber und-treibenden und klatschen in ihre schon leicht krisenverkrampften Hände. So als ob all die Menschen hinter phantasievollen Usernames nur zwitschern oder status-updaten müssten und damit Millionen Internet-User auf der ganzen Welt erreichen. Als ob sie so im Handumdrehen und Nano-Sekunden erfolgreich ein neues Produkt launchen, einer Verkaufs-Aktion zu Millionen von Abnehmern verhelfen oder Neuigkeiten in größter Geschwindigkeit verbreiten könnten. Ist virales im Internet die neue Mundpropaganda, die sich wie ein Lauffeuer verbreitet? Ein Domino-Effekt? Irgendwie schon.
Das kommt natürlich auch auf die Neuigkeiten an. Wenn im Atlantik ein Flugzeug mit 300 Passagieren abstürzt oder Koks in Cola gefunden wird ist das natürlich etwas Anderes als der Design Relaunch eines niederösterreichischen Regionalblattes.

Wer glaubt, er kann mit mittelmäßigen, lauwarmen News die digitale Boheme in Kommunikations-Trance befördern muss früher aufstehen. Blogger und Twitterer oder facebook-User mit großen Netzwerken sind mittlerweile heiß umkämpft, genauso wie wirklich gute Journalisten gibt es wenige relevante Blogger/Twitterer und die haben alle Hände voll zu tun und verdienen Geld damit, andere anzustecken. Über allem steht der große Bruder Google und entscheidet letztendlich über Gedeih und Verderb. Macht man heute virales Marketing, reicht es nicht aus, ein bisschen herumzutweeten und Blogger mit Presse-Infos hinterlegt anzuquatschen oder eine witzige Community-Seite mit einem Gewinnspiel zu schalten.

Wer heute nicht mehr als 1.000 Follower auf Twitter hat oder nicht 3 Blog-Posts pro Woche schreibt, die nicht mindestens von 500 „Freunden“ gediggt werden wird gar nicht als existent wahrgenommen. Da sind die Star-Blogger teilweise auch recht faschistisch, probieren Sie#S aus, und lernen Sie Dissen 2.0 kennen…

Virales Marketing ist in Wirklichkeit Arbeit. Fast nichts verbreitet sich einfach so, vorallem bei einer Konkurenz von ca. 30 Milliarden anderen “total viralen und nicht gleich total interessanten” Nachrichten. Social Media PR bedeutet Pflege, permanente Kommunikation, stete Präsenz und persönliche Ansprache. Wer ein paar Tage nichts von sich hören lässt und sein Netzwerk stets erweitert, kann sich schon hinten anstellen. Das ist das Problem an der Echtzeit – denn sie passiert jetzt, ist schnell da und in 2 Minuten alt.

The music industry has long realised that physical distribution of CDs is not exactly paving a sucess-loaden path into the future…

But what can music labels and distributors do to efficiently strutt their musical stuff? The Vienna based tripwolf team had the ambitious idea to send a special viral film through the web along with a brand new iPhone app for travelers.

In order to succeed, the start-up needed to find the right people to work with, who would understand the power of impact such a film could develop amidst the place where target groups of today hang out – the internet. So we marvelled, flipped through our adress books and thought that we should gather some likeminded people and pull on one string. The idea was simple: get cool music by artists who want exposure, make a cool video and get anyone involved in the project to spread word over their channels… The travel guide tripwolf spoke to Erdem Tunakan, boss of Cheap Records and Patrick Pulsingers comerade in the time of Vienna’s musical electronic dub-haydays in the late nineties and Philipp Dorfmeister, musical visionary and founder of Ordis, a digital distribution service for young talented artists.

tripwolf: Erdem, Philipp, how important is the internet today to successfully promote artists?

Philipp: It’s essential! When we started in 2004, there was already a high demand for digital distribution of music and a lot of artists developped their fan base through platforms like myspace.

Erdem: We have used it for many years now, to communicate and essentially, to participate in the media world. Music is consumed very differently now then it was 10 years ago – even if I am still a big fan of vinyl we cannot refuse to acknowledge the impact, the internet has made for all of us in the industry.

tripwolf: So how do you communicate new acts and gigs about your artists?

Erdem: Well, next to our network and pr, we use myspace as webspaces and to showcase tracks and news, facebook for events and twitter to spread any info in real time. That is very exciting as it creates a closer relationship between the artists/labels and the fanbase.

Philipp: These tools create a dialogue, we can see trends and tendencies and approach people, who share the same interests. Erdem: What we realise tho is that the real-time aspect creates a much faster pace and you need to be present in order to keep those in-the-know interested. That’s the challenge in a fast changing world.

tripwolf: That sounds exciting! What kind of goals do you want to reach by promoting artists online?

Erdem: Well, the biggest goal is to land a gig with a big advertising agency or even the film industry. That’s where the money is now. We are happy to cooperate with people like you guys because the idea is to spread music through channels that correlate with it.

Philipp: By using the internet, we can monitor the audience really well. You can follow how many people download an album on itunes or how many people watch a video clip on youtube and even where those people come from.

Erdem: That shows us where the fans are and what they like and we can react to those insights in our communication and eventually in our organisation of gigs. Christopher Klettermayer and I were bored one spring weekend ad we decided to put up a shoot in my living room. We invited Sarah, a mutual friend and used a lot of color to defy the gloomy weather. Loud David Bowie music and a bottle of champagne did the rest…

Ich bin sicherlich kein Weihnachtsfan. In meiner Wohnung gibt es keinen Adventskranz-Kerzenschein oder „Last Christmas“-Gesäusel, Plätzchen backen überlasse ich anderen Mitgliedern meiner Familie und welcher Advent ist, weiß ich traditionell nur durch den sonntäglichen Morgen-Anruf meiner Mutter. Was die Werbebranche wegen offensichtlich mangelnder Ideen aber gerade mit dem Fest der Nächstenliebe veranstaltet, übersteigt sogar meine weihnachtliche Ablehnung des Konsumfanatismus bei weitem. Letztes Jahr sagte Jung von Matt (JvM) Geschäftsführer Andreas Putz: „Weihnachten ist uns schon ein bisserl auf die Nerven gegangen“ (WTF??) zur Osterhasenkampagne.

Wir leben jedoch in Mitteleuropa, Weihnachten ist Jesus` Geburtstag und als wir noch klein und gläubig waren, kam am 24.Dezember das Christkind mit Geschenken. Damals stellte ich es mir als engelsgleiche Gestalt vor und hing am abendlichen Fenster, um einen Blick darauf zu erhaschen. Wer heute an das Fest denkt, kann kaum umhin, an eine muskelbepackte Kaufkraft, den Coca-Cola Santa oder absurderweise den Osterhasen zu denken. Denn Mediamarkt stellt seinen Blödmännern die Muskelfrau als Gehilfin zur Seite, Saturn verwirrt Geizhälse mit dem Osterhasen, der die Technik von morgen schon heute verspricht. Was zum Engel haben die aber mit unserem Weihnachten zu tun – und: Was sollen denn jetzt die Kinder denken, deren Eltern kaum noch eine Erklärung für diese Parodie haben können? Die Werbebranche hat den Fehler begangen, Mythen zu zerstören, alte Geschichten anzugreifen und ins Lächerliche zu ziehen. Und das alles mit der Absicht, schwarze Zahlen unter die Wunschzettel zu schreiben. Müssen Konsumenten jetzt also ihre ganze (Kauf)-Kraft darauf anwenden, sich diesen Zirkus leisten zu können, selbst dann, wenn zwar Weihnachten drauf steht, aber Osterhase drin ist?
